FrontPage 2003 and Sharepoint Portal Server integration?

I'm new to Frontpage 2003 after spending years avoiding the previous versions, preferring to use better tools for web development. I'm also new to Sharepoint Portal Server. (1) Are there any good resources on how to set up Frontpage 2003 to edit Sharepoint Portal sites? (2) Best practices

I've looked at some FP books and other documents and am getting a bit frustrated. I have Sharepoint Portal server running some sites on Windows Server 2003 for test purposes. I am set up as administrator on both the Server and through Sharepoint sites. I have FP running on my Windows XP laptop. When I try to import the website through the FP Wizard and synchronize the site, I get an error indicating that I don't have permission to do so. I have no idea where it's pulling the user rights from. Logically I would expect either the server rights, sharepoint rights, or domain rights. But they don't seem to matter. (3) Am I required to use FP2003 ON THE SERVER hosting the Sharepoint Portal Server? This would make sense to me but I've been told it's not necessary. I'm kinda running blind here with only the MS Online Books as an immediate resource. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I know there must be some simple things I'm just missing!

FrontPage 2003 Inside Out.

I've looked at some FP books and other documents and am

No, that's not necessary.

If so, there may be a problem with the type of content
you're trying to upload. SharePoint will reject file name
extensions such as .asp, .dll, and .exe because it would
be a security breach to let files like that execute.
Namely, they could circumvent SharePoint security.

Neither Windows SharePoint Services nor SharePoint Portal
Server is a clean upgrade from the FrontPage Server
Extensions. SharePoint offers lots of cool, new
capabilities, but lots of restrictions as well. It really
works best on corporate portal sites.

Yes, the SharePoint admin section was used to grant me permissions based on my Domain account for editing content as a portal site user. But I also have computer rights given to me as administrator outside of Sharepoint. It just seems a bit confusing as to how things are set up

The 2003 Server and Portal Server are freshly installed on a new machine. FP is a new installation on my laptop. So we haven't even messed with FP Server Extensions, if that matters. I would like to set up a working corporate portal server and this is my first initiation into the steps involved with doing so. Trial by fire

Basically I just need to edit the look and feel of the default SharePoint Portal site so that later on I can make the look of our intranet and our internet site cohesive. I checked out Chapter 37/38 of the Inside Out book but it still left me wondering how to get the webpart or templates into FP so that I can make some graphic changes. I saw Microsoft do it at Comdex and I got very excited about being able to do this. Now I'm in the trenches and can't seem to get it right.

One key point: you say "I'm just trying to get the files from the

that you MAY be doing something wrong.

To get started at the most base-case level, just browse to your SharePoint
Portal site in Internet Explorer and click "File > Edit in Microsoft Office
FrontPage"

This will open the site in FrontPage and allow you to edit it. Make sure
you do not try to open pages from the file system or UNC share or anything.
Just edit them via the above command. Of course, remember, this means you
are editing visible pages live on the server, so be careful.
