Wow... I think I downloaded professional updates and needed to download XP
home updates in its stead. Because it will NOT download the updates for
professional outlook mail junk filter and 2 others... could that mean its
possible? I bought this computer from a user and i remember it logging on as
XP home before... I know dopey! Anyway, I need to figure out why it keeps on
kicking back these same three updates and the shield keeps popping back with
those same updates needed..... Help please someone, its frustrating,...
thanks

No it is not possible. With very few exceptions, the updates for home
and professional are the same and there are no separate downloads for
the different versions. The exceptions would be with regard to
updates that affect only the features and functions of XP that are
foudn only in Pro and are not included with Home; and there are not
very many of these.

What are the specific updates (names and/or numbers) that are giving
you problems? There may be a known cause for the problems you are
encountering and therefore it may be relatively easy to fix or
overcome.

Good luck

I suspect that you misunderstand what's happening. You're probably not
running into a problem with updates to Windows.

The Outlook junk mail update would be referring to an MS Office install, and
the Office install, *not Windows XP*, appears to be where the problem lies.

It would help to know what the other two updates are and what the actual
failure messages are.

If they, too, are Office updates, the problem could potentially be with
validation of the Office install. If, for example, the system has an
Office VLA install that uses a key that MS has now blacklisted (and there
are some keys that have recently attained this status), the updates may be
detected, but install rejected, and this may throw back the error you see.

It may be something else entirely, but try this, since you are apparently
using the full "microsoft update" as opposed to Windows Update - this looks
for updates for several installed MS products, not just Windows, and may not
show you all the error messages.

Go to the MS Office update site. An easy way to do this is to open any
Office app, like Word, and go to Help, then Microsoft Office Online. In the
upper right-hand section, click on Check for Updates, and try to download
the updates from there. This will check the install key on your Office
install, and tell you if it's been blacklisted and refuse to install the
updates. Or, it may install the updates properly, or fail in some other
way and show you some extended error information.

These updates have nothing to do with the differences between XP Home
and XP Professional.

Does "unsuccessfully installed" look like an oxymoron?
"Failed to install" seems more like it.

It looks like you might be confusing updates for your operating system,
which is Windows XP, with updates for Microsoft Office (the suite of
applications, which includes Word, Excel, and Outlook). Also, "Home" and
"Professional" are different versions of XP; they have nothing to do
with whether or not your PC has Microsoft Office.

Also, it looks like when you purchased this PC from another person, it
had XP Home as its operating system. Has someone altered it, perhaps
replacing the OS with XP Professional?

What do you mean by "unsuccessfully installed?" What exactly happens
when you try to download these updates? Have you tried rebooting your
PC? Sometimes this is necessary to complete the installation.
