Frequent Program Crashes

I am using Win-XP Home on a 2.8 GHz PC equipped with 3GB of RAM. Of late,
while working with several programs open (which is my usual MO), some
programs (but not the entire PC) seem to be crashing frequently. These
include standalone programs such as PhotoShop as well as Java based
applications.

Any ideas why this may be happening?
 
Try running Memtest86+, this runs from a boot disk and should eliminate or
confirm if your ram is bad.
Let it run for as long as you can, 2,4,6,8 or more hours, if no errors by
then your ram is OK.
