Frequent Hung Applications

I have several audio editor applications (Iomega HotBurn Pro V2.5.6,
IsoBuster V1.8, Sonic Audio Module V7, Nero Wave Editor V2.0.0.43) that have
started resulting in “Program Not Responding†error messages. For the error
message to appear the program must open a data file (.wav). Sometimes one
audio program will close while another one won’t. Generally, Windows Task
Manager will not close the application (hung application) or shut down the
laptop and the ONLY escape is to manually turn the power switch off. I am
using a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop running Win XP Home Edition with SP3.
HungApp timeout is set to default of 5000 milliseconds. Hardly ever do I get
a hung Application with other types of programs ( e.g., Word, Excel, MS
Publisher, Photoshop, etc.). What are some of the most likely causes of
this problem? Are there any tools that can help me solve this problem.

The following will not solve your problem but may help by exiting hung apps
without user intervention, taking some of the strain, as it were, out of the
problem. Paste the following into the run box on the start menu and press
[ok]

reg ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v AutoEndTasks /d 1 /f

(make sure it's all in there as there may be a problem with line-wrap)
This will ensure all 'hung' programs Auto-end and terminate themselves
automatically. This does not affect error reporting.

If it's only happening with those audio apps, I would think there might
be some conflict with some files that one or more of those programs may
be loading on startup. If you have the install CD's or files, you might
uninstall all but one, test it thoroughly by itself, add another, test
both repeatedly, then another, etc.

Tim:
I must be missing something, but the "run box" does not appear to have any
method for pasting an item into it. There is no edit menu. Do I have to use
REGEDIT?

Highlight the line of text I sent you by dragging the mouse over it while
holding down the left button. While it is highlighted, right-click upon it
and choose 'copy from the [right-click] menu. THEN, in the "Run" box.
Right-click inside the text-input area (indicated when your cursor changes
to the text tool) of the "Run" box and choose 'paste' from the list. It
will then appear in the box.
NOTE: The item 'paste' will only be available on the [right-click] menu if
you have correctly 'copied' something to the clipboard (i.e. by highlighting
it and choosing 'copy')

If the OP didn't understand what was meant by 'copy and paste', he isn't
going to understand what the isolated statement of "Ctrl-V" is about!
