Having a problem with windows xop home freezing all of the
time. not programme specific, isn't fussy when it freezes.
alt/ctrl/delete doesn't work. thought it may be SP2 so
uninstalled, no different, reinstalled windows, no
different. please help, I'm going mad.

Unless it is a process taking over, it sounds hardware
related. If the screen goes black and never comes back,
it could be the processor overheating. A good thing to
check is that the power supply fan and the CPU fan are
both running quietly (same with the case fan if there is
one.)

Disabling hardware in the device manager can be a good
way of identifying a bad device. This won't work reliably
with a CD drive that is on the same cable as the hard
drive; you will have to unplug the data cable from teh CD
drive to be sure of that. If disabling an ethernet port
fixes the problem and that is a port you connect to the
network with, the problem can be outside the port -
including speed settings.
