freezing on restart after SP1 update

When I try to update with Service Pack 1, the download
and update seems to go perfectly smoothly, but then when
I restart the computer it freezes. It gets the Windows
XP splash screen with the three green bars moving from
left to right, and just when you think it's going to
start up, the bars stop. As far as I can tell, nothing
to do but turn the machine off and reinstall XP from the
CD. This has happened three times.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Hit F8 at startup to access the boot menu, try the last known good
configuration.
