hey guys
little bit of a problem i'm hoping you might be able to help me with

i was playing on my laptop
(windows xp home, 2.5ghz, 40G hd, 256ddr ram, 64ram -or something-)
and then it decides to flash what i think was the BSOD briefly, then
restart.
when it loaded up again, the same thing happened.
The third time it booted it came up with the black screen where it
offers:
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration
start windows normally.
when i selected any (and in the end ALL in desperation) the screen just
froze.

then i remembered about pressing F5 and the same option came up with
more (enable VGA mode, debugging mode etc). when i selected any, i
selected windows xp home and then the screen went blank and froze
again. i've got a windows xp professional cd, lost the home cd. I put
it in the drive, but nothing happens - just the same thing.

i think that's all the info i can give you, but if anyone can help
you'll be saving me writing me 7hours of coursework and i'll be SOOOOO
grateful!
regards,
Matt

Hi,

Without knowing what the BSOD error is, it's pretty difficult to diagnose.
If SP2 was installed, one of the boot options would be to start without
auto-restart on system failure, usually this produces the BSOD and hangs so
that you can get the information off it. Otherwise, you may need your WinXP
Home disk to do a repair installation. It is possible too that you have a
hardware failure, in which case a repair installation is not going to help,
you will need to diagnose and replace the faulty component - something best
done by a competent technician.
