Freeware so it must be junk attitude

Interesting story I heard yesterday.

A friend who has been using AVG Antivirus just went out a bought Norton AV
because one of his friends reported he had problems with AVG and his
computer. So my friend figured AVG must be junk and unreliable, even though
he has used it trouble free for more than a year.

There is so much info on newsgroups such as this, the Microsoft groups,
online message boards such as the one run by Grisoft, as well as on web
sites that bench test this stuff. So it sort of surprises me that so many
simply don't know they can easily find out what's good and what's not, or
they don't want to bother. Stories like this make me realize how much
knowledge and confidence you get just perusing lots of posts and other
information every now and then.

I'm sure my friend never checks out all this free info, and I bet his friend
did little to find out if AVG was the real culprit or, if it was involved,
whether that signals something is wrong with his machine. I guess they just
figured if it's free, it can't be that good. I know some users who reject my
suggestions for neat freeware because they believe freeware generally
contains viruses and spyware.

The prejudice is kind of interesting as is the lack of knowledge people have
about how many good resources are out there.

Well, (s)he may be in for a surprise then... I have two friends who
both got infected with a very nasty virus while their system was
running a very regularly updated NAV. Another friend used EZ-AV
(eTrust... well known here :-) ), one of their larger updates screwed
up the installation, result: No eMail scanning. It took etrust's
support department over a week to even start doing something (FTR: This
was a paid for subscription). Also, given the problems NAV had not so
long ago (check out Secunia), I wouldn't advise NAV to anyone of my
friends (that is... if I want to keep them as such :-D)

All three are on AVG now, and are very pleased with it!

You can say whatever you want from AVG, but the program is stable and
does the job, updates flow in regularly (sometimes more than one a day).

Anthony, it's a pity your friend didn't have a more closer look at what
was going on at the time.

Regards
Dick

Totally agree. I have learned so much from newsgroups/google searches,
etc, etc....there is so much good stuff out there. Using Avast! and
Spybot I have helped sort out two friends recently whose PCs were
infested with spyware and/or viruses. Got their systems cleared of the
problems and showed them how to work with the programs and updates,
etc. A big thanks to all you whizz kids out there making these progs -
we do appreciate it!
Dee.

Thank you both for the responses!
