free space lost

I removed 50 gbs. from an external drive today.

After rebooting the machine and running defrag, I have noticed that
the free space hasn't been reclaimed.
The external drive is NTFS.
The files don't show up when I do a search.

what is happening?

thanks

Are you running anything from Norton - such as their protected recycle bin?
If so, that must be emptied along with the Vista recycle bin.

Maybe you could be a little more clear what you have done. You don't remove
space from a drive, but from a partition. Free space isn't reclaimed until
you add the free space back to the partition or create another partition.
How did you create the freespace and with what? What files don't show up
and where are you searching?

I highlighted a folder on my external drive. I then "Shift-Deleted" a
folder.
I have search the hard drive and external drive for the folder and
files. They are not there.
Weird thing. When I rebooted the laptop this AM, I picked up 10 gbs
from the external drive. Instead of 50 gbs. missing, I am missing 40
gbs.

"Shift-delete" = permanantley delete ( gone ) .
