Free Avira Changes

A new free version is available. It is around an 80MB download. It is now
called Avira Free Antivirus instead of Avira AntiVir Personal.
That's all I know about.
Just a notification, not a recommendation.

Does not install on my Win2000ProSP4 system.
Error is "presetup.exe is not a valid win32 application."
Still looking for the System Requirements.

Go figure.
Buffalo
PS: You would think that the OS requirements would be very visible. :(

Not being a valid win32 application should apply to all OSes that
support win32 applications. Perhaps you have a corrupted file?

I just looked up the minimm OS requirements for the 'paid' version and it
was XP.
Amazes me that they don't emphasize their System requirements.

It's sad that they aren't including W2K, quite possibly the most stable
MS OS ever. There are still quite a few in use out there.

Window$ 2000 is no longer a supported Micro$oft product. WinXP's support
would be discontinued soon.

If that ASK toolbar nonsense is still a part of Avira,
I'll pass. I liked Avira before that crap came along.
I'm getting by okay with MSSE.

Avira Free Antivirus appeared on 2011-10-04.
First version was 12.0.0.849, followed by versions 851 and now 855.

In a previous version of Avira I refused to accept the offer from Ask
and Ask has not returned in the newer versions.

I know, but that's no excuse for an AV vendor to abandon a still fairly
widely used software platform.

The job requires a real-time virus scanner as well as updates to the OS.

It may still work on W2k even though it says min. req. is XP.

It would be nice if it would work under Win2K.

Can't figure out how to disable the online update attempt every time the
PC is booted. Was able to do so with previous versions but the option is
not there or recognizable to me in the Administration menus.

What update attempt?
Ah, I understand

Start Avira Free Antivirus
- Extras
- Configuration
- select Expert Mode
- PC Protection
- Update
I unticked both selections

To update Avira I did as follows:

Start Avira Free Antivirus
- Administration
- Scheduler

There you can control what is done.
I have inserted jobs to update every two (2) hours.
I have inserted jobs to scan twice per week.
