FP2K - Server, memory & permissions errors

D

DontEvenBother

FP had been working fine for a couple of years with no hiccups and then
today, all of a sudden, I keep getting the following error messages
when attempting to save or rename files.

- Server Error: Cannot create file

- An unexpected error occurred: Not enough memory to complete the
operation. Close other programs to make more memory available, and
then try again.

- An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files,
Authors - if authoring against a web server, please
contact the webmaster for this server's site.
WebMasters - please see the server's system log for more
details

This is happening on my local copy of the web in a folder designated as
a web. I am running XP Pro and IIS. Task manager reports ample memory
so I am not inclined to believe the memory error right off the bat.

I have created no new webs or subwebs. MS Knowledgebase article 260159
didn't really apply, but I tried removing/re-adding users per its
instrustions to no avail.

No changes to speak of on this box (new hardware, software or updates,
etc.) FP was working fine 2 days ago. Today. Not so happy.

Where is the server log located? I checked c:\windows\system32\W3SVC1
and the only logs for the past 3 days show very similar entries logging
activity, as follows, but no error messages:

23:44:16 192.168.1.100 POST /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.dll 200
23:44:16 192.168.1.100 GET /pics/small-ad.gif 200

Is there another log file I should check?
Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

1. Close FrontPage and do a windows search for file named cmdui.prf and delete it when found.
2. Do a windows search for files named *.web and delete all found.
3. Open FrontPage and see what happens.

If no good go here:
http://freespace.virgin.net/john.freelanceit/clear_windows_paging_file_at_shu.htm
and follow the procedures for clearing the windows paging file.
It takes 2 restarts to take effect.

Then open FrontPage and try again.

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately, those suggestions didn't work. The first of which
(deleting cmdui.prf and *.web) has resulted in the following FP error :
Server Error: Cannot load DLL "\fp4Autl.dll"

Now I can no longer open any webs, local or remote, as this error keeps
popping up when I try.

Now what?

Reinstall or repair FP in Control panel Add remove programs - FP
Have you tried the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Yes

Yes, that was suggested by Steve in this thread.

Not previously, but tried it this morning and no change resulted.
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier
site)

All updates are current according to Windows Update - even non-critical
ones.
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Don't have any addins installed to my knowledge, but can't do anything
in FP to check. Every event fires the above stated error message.

I'm beginning to think a Windows Restore is a decent option as nothing
short of data has changed on this machine in months. At this point it
couldn't hurt (famous last words).

A repair or uninstall / reinstall of FP should correct FP since your error is w/ FP, not Windows
- if you uninstall FP use the Windows Installer cleaner before you reinstall FP
