FP2003 comes with a manual? Only got a 25pg booklet.

I purchased FP2003 from Amazon.com. It only came with the disc, and a 25
page booklet, "Guide to Microsoft FrontPage 2003." Is that it?

Yes. Most info is in the help system or online.

FP 2000 came with a "Getting Started" manual that has over 300 pages and was
helpful and I could review it while waiting at the doctors office (wherever).
I was expecting the same. Would had not purchased if I had known FP2003 did
not have the same.

Not much software I buy anymore comes with a manual, due to the high
printing costs. Being the electronic age, they've gone to online manuals
and more extensive help files.

My company has purchased high dollar software and hardware...and have had to
download pdf or html manuals that are hundreds and hundreds of pages.

Part of the new way of life ;-)

All the help you need is in the help. But if you need the hard stuff go to
your local library and take out a few books here in England you can renew 5
times then take the book in so they can see it and renew it again ... till
you don't need it anymore.. it's just a matter of getting used to things
there are free classes and help on the net.. but first stop the frontpage
help.

The online help is only of any use if you (a) have managed to install the
software ok without reading the manual (!) and (b) if you are at your
computer.

Personally, I like to take time out to read a hard copy of a manual away
from the computer. I find that it is very helpful if I'm having a problem
to be able to read up on it without the distraction of the PC, which makes
me want to fiddle with settings and maybe mess things up worse than they
were before..!

If online help is the "way to go" then why are 3rd party manuals and
handbooks so popular..?

I've wondered that myself on a number of occasions, but it seems that to add
the $40 or so that a good manual would run, some people wouldn't but it. by
not including the manual the price is better and those who need one would go
and buy a plethora of different books on the application.

I've bought em. you'll probably wind up doing the same. :)

FWIW; I'd rather a PDF than, or in addition to the f-1 help manual. I like
printed material. even if I have to print it myself.

Because the cost of the software would go up, as you know have additional printing cost, freight
cost to distributor, then retailer, and then to the end-user.

Since all the info is in the Help file, you can always print a section to read. However with Office
2003 the help file is connected to the web, which allows for it to be updated as needed, which is
not possible with a hardcopy manual.

True ... but it does not come with a manuel and nothing can be done about
that. So the best solution is to use the library if you don't want to pay
out any more... personally I get all the books from the library I can lay my
hands on, and ask for one of the fp books I like for my birthday or such.
Plus you can also (here in the UK) request books that the library does not
have for 50p. Or you can find bargins in ebay for the books you want.

Or go to sites and print out the tutorials to read... your welcome to do
that with mine ... my fp03 one's are mainly on

more at http://anyfrontpage.com but from the next issue to get the full
monty on the article and ezine you have to be a member .. all free though
and a free ebook for members too .. see plenty of free resources around the
net ... I've lots of fp links at http://accessfp.net as well (needs
updating)... here is the updated FrontPage Resource List that get's posted
here from time to time.

Hope this helps

Because you're not paying for a hard copy manual.

I don't understand the controversy here. It's not like no-manual-included is
something new.

Yes I am..! I'm paying for the software, how am I supposed to learn how to
install and use it..? Don't say online help please, that only works if
I've successfully installed it..! I shouldn't have to come to a group like
this one for help either, although I am very grateful to the help I have
received in the past from those here and in other groups.
I don't understand the controversy here. It's not like
no-manual-included is
something new.

I'm paying for the software, I expect manuals. Is that hard to
understand..? Or should there be a charge to supply them..? Isn't the
price of the software enough..? Or do software developers want people to
buy 3rd party manuals rather than supply them..?

I have an entire shelf filled with manuals supplied by Novell when I
installed their Netware server OS. Why can't others do the same..?

This is my last word on the subject as we're obviously not going to agree.

Ivor

Exactly - You're paying for the *software*
how am I supposed to learn how to install and use it..? Don't say online
help please
Use the online help. Software always, in my experience comes with
instructions on how to install it.
I'm paying for the software, I expect manuals.
You're expectations are unrealistic, and you are doomed to a sorrowful
existence, wrought with despair unless you change them.
Is that hard to understand..?
Yes. no-manual-included is SOP, and has been for some time now. Heck,
computers don't even come with manuals anymore.
Or should there be a charge to supply them..? Yes.

Isn't the price of the software enough..? No.

Or do software developers want people to buy 3rd party manuals rather than
supply them..?
Yes. 3rd party manuals have always been superior to included docs. Software
companies are in the *software* business.
Besides, why would anybody want to pay the additional amount for crappy docs
when they could pick docs suited to their particular abilties and interests
instead?
I have an entire shelf filled with manuals supplied by Novell when I
installed their Netware server OS.
I think you're exaggerating.
Why can't others do the same..?
Why would they?
This is my last word on the subject as we're obviously not going to agree.
Obviously, but I'll bet it's not your last word on the subject.
