FP won't connect to web site

G

Guest

I have FP 2003 with SP2

When I click on "Publish" I get a message which reads:

"Unable to open 'http://mysite.com' Possible causes:
1) Teh web server may not have the FrontPage Serveer Extensions installed
2) The web server may be temporarily out of service
3. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be
incorrect
4. An error may have occurred in the web server
OK

I have carried on extensive dialog with the server technicians. The FP
extensions are installed on the site. They have successfully accessed the
site with FP. They cannot duplicate the error I get. I cannot open the site
"live" from FP. I CAN get to it from using my browser.

I have used FP for over a year successfully to administer two other sites on
the same host with no problem. Now I cannot access those sites either. I
get the same message. But they are all accessible through the IE browser.

I'm stuck. Please help. Many thanks.

See if you can open you online site in FP using
File Open Site and enter your URL as http://www.mysite.com/
or browse to it in IE and try File Edit w/ FP
- if you can open it you can reverse publish

To the OP, note the 'www' in front of your URL in Stefan's post below, as
compared to your original post which didn't contain the 'www'. That is
probably the reason you can't access it.

Using File | Open site, I get the message "The folder 'http://mysite.com'
isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location,
protected with a password, or the file name contains a / or \."

This happens with or without the "www", but the server tech instructed me to
NOT use the "www".

It appears to be looking for a file name since the URL will always have a
"/" included.

I am using IE 6.0. when I use it to go to the site, my FILE menu doesn't
contain an "Edit w/FrontPage" option. In fact, the "Edit" choise is in
background.

I am having the same problem on one of my computers. I can go to another
computer and connect to the site using FP and the edit brower button is
useable.

Sorry, Kathleen. I had to get some stuff done, so I disabled the extensions
this afternoon and have been doing maintenance through the File Maintenance
routine at the site. (I even used my text editor and had to look up some
HTML commands that had left me.)

Maybe I've created a dead end here. I realize I can't test it out now, at
least from my computer. But FP is absolutely useless to me and after
spending two days trying to straighten it out, I just couldn't wait longer.

Any suggestions?

If you were to reenable the server extensions long enough for someone to try
and connect, that would help rule out (or not) any local problems with your
machine. As it is right now, I can't connect to your site either using
FrontPage.

I can get there with my browser.

How is the subdomain hopkins57 setup?
If it is a folder in the root web (http://www.bethwood.com) then
FrontPage will never be able to access it directly - it must be
accessed as that folder example http://www.bethwood.com/foldername/
Make foldername a subweb of the rootweb. Subwebs are treated as
completely independent webs, but when used as subdomains all links
into and out of the subdomain must be absolute links.

If the subdomain is on its own virtual server, then the extensions
must be installed on this server as well as on the server running

Yes, you can get there with a browser.

The host technicians several times told me that they they could get there
through FP. Others on the forums have said that had this problem with one
computer, but not with a second.

I am quite sure that the problem is local.

However, I am done messing with the site http://hopkins57.bethwood.com and
will enable the FP extensions on that site.

I do appreciate you help. Thanks.

OK - when I try and open http://hopkins57.bethwood.com/ with FP2003, I am
prompted for a username and password. My guess is that it's something local
to your PC.

Thanks.

If you were to reenable the server extensions long enough for someone to
try
and connect, that would help rule out (or not) any local problems with
your
machine. As it is right now, I can't connect to your site either using
FrontPage.

I can get there with my browser.

Sorry, Kathleen. I had to get some stuff done, so I disabled the
extensions
this afternoon and have been doing maintenance through the File
Maintenance
routine at the site. (I even used my text editor and had to look up
some
HTML commands that had left me.)

Maybe I've created a dead end here. I realize I can't test it out now,
at
least from my computer. But FP is absolutely useless to me and after
spending two days trying to straighten it out, I just couldn't wait
longer.

Any suggestions?

Using File | Open site, I get the message "The folder
'http://mysite.com'
isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable
location,
protected with a password, or the file name contains a / or \."

This happens with or without the "www", but the server tech
instructed
me
to
NOT use the "www".

It appears to be looking for a file name since the URL will
always
have
a
"/" included.

I am using IE 6.0. when I use it to go to the site, my FILE menu
doesn't
contain an "Edit w/FrontPage" option. In fact, the "Edit" choise
is
in
background.

See if you can open you online site in FP using
File Open Site and enter your URL as http://www.mysite.com/
or browse to it in IE and try File Edit w/ FP
- if you can open it you can reverse publish

Yes, I think we've established that it's something on my machine. Any ideas
on what thing it could be? I've been locked out of my router (after 2+
years) with a "Your not authorized" message and I'm working with Linksys to
figure out why. I've also received an FP error on occasion which says "The
folder . . . isn't available. The folder may be . . . . .protected with a
password . . . ." This appears to be something with the operating system (I
recently reinstalled it). Any ideas ?
