FP will NOT open my web!

G

Guest

I'm trying to open my web on my local server through My Documents like I
usually do. I open FP then I click: File/Open/MyWebs etc and click on my
folder then a file to open and on the bottom left side of the screen, just
about Start it says "LoadingC:/MyDocuments...." etc and it continues to
"load" never opening anything up. It's been going on for over a week now.
My server insists that it's nothing on their end, as they have no problems
opening my site. I've uninstalled and reinstalled FP and that still hasn't
done anything. I don't know if it's trying to open a large file and it's
getting "stuck" or what, but I don't know of any other way to edit a file to
make it smaller so that FP will open it, IF THAT'S what the problem is.
Please help me! This has been going on over a week now and I can't get my
website republished.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Try FILE | OPEN *WEB* then browse to your local web.

If you are trying it exactly as you state below you are trying to open the FOLDER called *My Webs* and not your Web.

I'm not positive, but I think I first click on MyWebs and then MyWeb (I do
click on MyWeb though), but anyhow there's another problem. FP was set up to
automatically open the current file I was working on, so as soon as FP is
opened it tries to load the file, but it's as if it's getting stuck. So I
can not change anything to my FP settings in FP because of this being setup
that way. Make sense? I hope so.
any other suggestions?

Open FP, go to Tools | Options | General tab and UN-check Open Last Web...when FP Starts.

Are you saying that you named your Web "MyWeb" within the folder called MyWebs?...thats not too confusing!

You really MUST contact your host and get the 403 Forbidden situation resolved...

Did you have a website up and going on this URL already?

If you are opening your local web on your own hard disc, your host has
absolutely no control or influence over this.

Have you tried some cleanup?
With FrontPage closed, Find and delete all *.web cache files, normally
located at
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
Paste this into the Windows Explorer address bar.
Delete all files at this location, FP will recreate them as and when
required.
Also delete all FP temp files:
In FP2003 located at:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
Other versions:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp

Also empty your Internet Explorer temporary files.

We went through the whole computer and cleaned it up stuff including all the
temp files and the .web files. And I can't uncheck open last web because it
starts loading as soon as it's opened and it hangs there and never loads so I
can't get to anything else. And the 403 forbidden error is because it's not
finding my homepage. That's because I can't load my web in FP to publish it.
See why I have a major problem?!!

Any other ideas, PLEASE!

Thanks,
Jennifer

Jennifer,

FP is set to open you live site, since that was the last site open at the time.

You have indicated that you host moved or did something with your web site, this is where the 403
error is coming from. So the issue is to see if you can get your host to restore your site to it
original location/ip address.

Thanks! Awesome, I'll try that! They never directly answer my questions,
just go at them in a round about way. I'll see what I can do!

Thanks,

Jennifer. You're not alone! I have run into this same problem lately and
have not been able to find the answer. It started happening to me this past
Friday morning after my computer had a windows auto update and my computer
was rebooted automatically. Since that time my name and password comes up to
connect and after I send it out, it just collects information until my
computer runs out of memory. I have a second computer and it was working
fine for several days and now it's starting to do the same thing. I've tried
reinstalling and restore and nothing seems to help. I just read about trying
to change my options so it doesn't open the last web page and I'm hoping it
will work.

BTW, I've been using the same program and web site for several years and
this is the first time I've had this problem. So the problem might not be
your host. I'll check back in this area in case there are more suggestions

Thomas- I'm not certain that it was caused by the security update, but it
happened to have started at that time. Not sure if it was a coincidence at
this point, because a second computer on the same router had an update and
still worked fine for a few days. But if all else fails, I'll make that
call. I am on my computer at work and I can connect to my web site just fine
with FP from here.

Unfortunately after today, I'll be out of town for about 4 days, so I"ll
have to get back on this issue when I return. Or maybe I'll get lucky and
someone else will seek out this area and give us the solution in the meantime.

BTW, I noticed Jennifer was having problems with a local server. Mine is
with a remote server - but it sounds almost identical.

Thanks for the note Brian! I feel better knowing that I'm not going crazy!!
Mine problem started last week Monday already. At this point, I don't know
what the hell is going on anymore. Everyone I ask always assumes it has to
do with uploading my website to the internet, but I can't even open my
website! I'm still waiting for an email from my web server to see what they
can do if anything. I don't know how else to access my website so that I can
edit my pages and then upload it.

Thanks, and if I ever find a solution I will let you know!

Jennifer-

I did happen to notice that when I have my name and password come up to log
in, that if I cancel and just stay in FP, that if you go to the list of
recent documents that you've used that you can choose individual files and
they will come up (I was so happy to see this). But as soon as I try to open
the web files in general, that ole hourglass comes up and it just sits there!

Let me try that again. It doesn't make sense that I would cancel the name
and password connection and still be on line. I must have tried to connect,
and then pressed the red "X" on the menu when it was trying to bring back the
files to stop the download. And then I clicked on one of the files listed
under "recently used files" and was able to edit them individually.

However, if you don't log in then you are not working within the web or the permissions are shot on
the web which means anyone can edit your site content.

I don't think that's the case. I'm thinking that my name and password did go
through and the fact that I pressed to stop the downloading of the files it
was trying to pick up, kept me in with permissions. (my web host is quite
reliable)

When I connect to my site from my work computer, everything works as it
should.

Sometimes I think I could make this problem go away if I could clean out all
of the remaining files after uninstalling FP. When I reinstall, it always
remembers my name and password and it seems to me it shouldn't know that!
After the uninstall, I cleaned out all my temp files and cookies and did a
search for any files that had an FP in them that I knew were from Front Page
and deleted them. And then I would even reboot. But when I would install
FP fresh, it still seemed to recognize my name and password to bring them up
automatically for me. Which makes me think it is still storing information
somewhere. If I could get a clean start, I'm thinking the problem might go
away. (positive thinker) It seems weird that I can bring up files from my
recent files listing, but to bring in the whole web site is a problem.

I believe the passwords are stored as part of IE...if I remember correctly

Rob- I think you are right about the name and password being remembered
coming from IE.

Get this. While I was at work today, I cleaned out some of my directories
on my host (I have a lot of files). And after 3 days of having this same
problem, I got home today and pulled up FP and everything worked normal
again. It doesn't seem like I had that many files to pull up, but it's the
only change I made today.

Unless my problem was different than yours, Jennifer, you might try getting
on another computer with FP and see if you can get to your files from there.
If so, maybe clean out some of your files and see if it works for you.

Since this problem seemed to disappear on it's own, I'm hoping it doesn't
come back on it's own again. At least for now, I'm a happy camper!

That happens if you get close to your web size limit..imposed by your hosting package.

Also...sometimes FP acts like my old '68 volkswagon when it broke down...I'd park it for 3 days and it would heal itself ;-)))

I don't think Jennifer has the same problem, as she cant seem to open local or remote webs.

You may be able to open your local site directly from a command line
or by using a shortcut.

See www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/pages/shortcut.htm
which shows examples of shortcut properties for a disc based web and
server based web for FP2003. Change the program path and website
details for your own situation.
The target can be typed into the Run box (Start->Run) to save building
the shortcut.
