FP 2003 Upgrade question

G

Guest

I currently have FrontPage 2000 Academic version I bought while a student.
I'm no longer a student but want to upgrade to FrontPage 2003.

Does anyone know if I can upgrade with the less-expensive "Upgrade Version",
or must I buy a brand-new full version of FrontPage 2003?

Thanks!

Thomas A. Rowe

I don't think is possible to upgrade Academic version of MS applications.

Thanks everyone. I should have clarified my question - or perhaps it's a
different question. The only reason I know I have the "Academic version" is
that the CD case says it is. Within the software, I can't tell that it's not
the full version. So did I get a non-upgradable "Academic version", or did I
get an "Academic discount" on the full upgradable version?

Any suggestions on how I can tell what version I have and if it's
upgradable? I already bought the upgrade software but haven't opened the
package yet. I doubt the store will take it back if I open it only to find
out out I can't upgrade after all.

Thanks!

Should tell you in the FP app using Help About or in your Control panel Add Remove program buy the listing for it

Where did you buy it? And to cut to the heart of the matter, if the case
says "Academic version", you have the Academic version.

FP Help->About says: "Microsoft(R) FrontPage(R) 2000 Version 4.0.2.6625"
followed by: "Copyright(c) 1995-1999 Microsoft Corporation, All rights
reserved." This is followed by 3 paragraphs of copyright information about
the spellcheckers for English, French and Spanish.

After that, on the left is "SP-3" and on the right is "This product is
licensed to:" with my name and the product ID (which is all numbers).

Then the bottom section has the copyright warning on the left and the "OK"
and other buttons on the right.

My computer came with Windows 2000 Pro and Office 2000 Pro. I purchased
FrontPage 2000 and Visual Studio while I was a student at Hunter College.

I had completely forgotten that I had an "Academic" version. I just bought
the FrontPage 2003 upgrade version but I haven't opened it. I got out my CD
from FrontPage 2000 in case I would need the product key for the upgrade -
then I noticed that it says (on the back of the CD): "You may only use this
Academic Edition if you are a qualified Educational User." blah, blah. Of
course all the webpages referenced for more information are no longer valid.
I've tried to find information on the MS websites but have been unsuccessful.
Maybe I've been using it illegally since I stopped being a student - I can't
even find that out because the website that is supposed to have that
information is not valid!

When I click on "Tech Support" from the FrontPage Help->About window, it
doesn't say anything specific about FrontPage, just about Office 2000
support. It also doesn't say anything about being an Academic version either.

My point is that I [apparently] have no way to tell if I can upgrade except
to try to install the upgrade and see if it works. But if it doesn't work
then I'm really screwed because not only do I have to buy the full version
but I doubt I can return the upgrade version once the package is opened.

Sorry if I sound like a whiner, but the price difference is a lot to me
right now. I'm currently unemployed while taking care of my mother who has
Alzheimer's and I'm just trying to keep myself from becoming totally obsolete
and unemployable when the time comes that I need to get a real job.

Welp...I doubt that you were using the Academic version illegally because you're not a student any longer...after all students to graduate at some point!...even I did.

You'd be taking a chance trying to use the upgrade...if it doesnt work (and who knows..it might..stranger things have happened)...you'd be out the bucks. Probably best to return the upgrade while you still can and buy the full version.

Or try calling Microsoft.

Help | About is not going to indicated whether the version is an Academic Edition version. However
you are entitled to use the current Academic Edition as long as you like, but you will have to
purchase a full copy of the current version.

I couldn't find a Microsoft phone number to call (or email either) that
doesn't have a price tag attached.

[sigh] I guess I will have to just bite the bullet and cough up for the full
product.
