FP 2003 Not Deleting Unused Files

A

Auerbach

I used a "spare" domain to build a test site. When that test site was no
longer needed I created a one-page site with an "under construction" page,
and published that to the domain. I expected FP 2003 to delete all the files
from the prior site. Instead, it simply replaced the Index.html page. I
tried again, setting "publish" to "all files and folder," not just "newer
files." Same result.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

Open the remote site directly in FP, then Tools | Web / Site Settings | Advanced tab and enable
viewing of hidden directories, then delete everything that you see from within FP, with the
exception of the _private and images folders, for these two folder, just delete any content within
them.

Thomas,

Thank you for your reply. I understand how to delete the remote files
manually. It's just that in the past, FP typically has offered to delete
files that are no longer included in the navigation structure. (E.g., when
an updated page no longer include a photo or PDF, or when one or several
pages are dropped from the site content.)

Obviously it is preferable for FP to handle this chore, both for efficiency
and to avoid clobbering the FP-critical files and folders. I was simply
wondering why FP had stopped doing this -- if, for example, there was a
setting that I could correct, etc.

FP will only delete files on the remote server when the local copy is in-sync with the remote copy.

So if you publish the live/remote site to your local machine, then later on your local, publish to
another location, and then publishing to the live/remote, chances are the FP will not delete files.
Also FP only delete files when you have the Change Pages Only option select for publishing.
