FP 2000 stealing virtual memory

I was making some changes to my website and this afternoon I tried applying
a global style change. Something happened and FP 2000 shut down with some
sort of memory error.. Now, when I try starting up FP, all I get is a white
screen and the hour glass. If I then bring up the Task Manager (Windows XP
Home) I can watch the virtual memory use rising until there is no more
virtual memory left. Eventually I get this error: "Ran out of memory while
trying to allocate 0 bytes."

I've tried removing and reinstalling FP 2000 but the problem persists. I've
also looked at the knowledgebase and can't find anything. HELP!!!

Virtual memory is the paging file. Run scandisk and defrag.
If the problem still exists it's quite possibly a corrupt paging file. ( it does happen )

Here is a method, written by a Windows XP MVP, to clear it / recreate it. iirc it requires making
the change and then rebooting twice.
Once for the change to take effect and the second time to clear the file.

fwiw, I've had my machine set to clear the file on shut down for quite some time.
I "never" get virtual memory errors.

Well, I modified the registry so that the paging file is created new with
each logon and I still get the same problem. As soon as FP 2000 is loaded,
the page file starts grow until I end the FP process through the Task
Manager. I've also scanned the hard drive and found no errors.

One odd thing though, shortly before the problem started I was changing the
editor that is associated with each file type. I had css files set to be
edited by Notepad.exe and, like an idiot, I decided to change it to
FrontPage. Editing css files with FP 2000 causes problems which I know
about but changed it anyway. After FP crashed I changed it back to
Notepad.exe. Now, when I can get into FP (which means that I have to run
out of paging file space first) and open the editor associations dialog box,
I noticed that one of the file types is blank. I wonder if this can be the
source of my problem?

Do you know where the FP startup files are located? In particular, I would
like to find the file which stores the editor file associations.

Are you using Windows XP, perchance? Have you tried doing a system
restore to before the problem began?

Well, I took your suggestion using system restored rolled back the system to
yesterday before the problem started but there was no change. FP continues
to gobble up the entire page file until I get a "Ran out of memory while
trying to allocate 0 bytes" message. At that point the program is not
working correctly (I can open the web I was working on) but I can go to the
Tools | Options menu and open the Configure Editor dialog. There continues
to be one line which has a blank file name but is associated with
notepad.exe, even if I delete that line. When I open the dialog again, the
blank file name is back. My guess is that the file where this information
is stored is somehow corrupted and might be causing the problem.

HELP PLEASE!!!

With FP closed, clear your temp folder, delete the FP temp folder, recycle bin, search for the
hidden/system *.web files and delete, then run a defrag.


Using RegEdit, search the registry for:

no_ext

This should get you to the section of the registry with FP Editor settings.

Where do I find the FP temp folder?

With FP closed, clear your temp folder, delete the FP temp folder, recycle
bin, search for the hidden/system *.web files and delete, then run a
defrag.


Using RegEdit, search the registry for:

This should get you to the section of the registry with FP Editor
settings.

I deleted the *.web files and found the line with the no_ext in the registry
and that did the trick. Thank you for your help!!

The FP Temp folder is inside the Windows Temp folder.
