'Found New Hardware MTP Device' Installation hangs

Hi, I wonder if you could help me. I have just tried to add an external hard
drive via USB, and the 'Found New Hardware Balloon' with 'MTP Device'
appeared but would not go away. Even when I click on the cancel icon it would
reappear straight away.
I investigated it further, at 'Add New Hardware' in the Control Panel and
found that the Device was shown as being installed and had 'hung'.
The Event Viewer shows Errors associated with WPDMTPDriver (16)
When I go to Device Manager in Control Panel the pane on the right with the
'tree' keeps flashing
There did not seem to be any way to cancel this operation. Would I have to
resort to a System Restore to get around this problem?
Many Thanks

I found reinstalling Windows Media Player (by removing the component under "Add/Remove Windows Components" and also uninstalling from "Add remove programs" by rolling back to a previous version. I haven't tried reinstalling 11, but at least it fixes the MTP problem.

Please note, disabling the balloon using taskbar -> customize is not a solution!
