Found New Hardware keeps opening

I installed an HP DVD Writer, dvd300i. It works fine in all
modes but whenever I start up my computer, the Found New
Hardware notice comes on and about 15 seconds later an
error message saying that Windows can not open the
Installer comes on then New Hardware Wizard opens up. I
have tried pointing the wizard to the HP Installation disk
but it can not find what it wants and I have tried to get
it to search my computer with no luck. I have to cancel the
installation and everything works fine, including the HP
DVD Drive. I have spoken with HP Tech Support and they say
it is a Windows 2000 issue. Any suggestions? Can I turn off
the PNP sensitivity to this specific device or turn it off
completely? The HP Drive does appear in the system folder
as one of the Drives as well.

This is not a terribly elegant solution but i;ve done this:

Instead of canceling just let the thing install itself again...
even if it can't find the drivers...just ignore that and choose to ignore or
skip
file . You may end up with an extra (non-working) entry in the device
manager...
but it's not likely to do any harm...and you will at least be done with the
annoyance.

.
I have tried that but the Wizard can not find the files
that it needs to install it. I have tried pointing it to
the installation disk and my c:\ drive. I just get the
message that it can not istall the device and to contact my
vendor for assistance then I have the option of Back or
Cancel. Not much room. Also, the drive is listed in Device
manager and says it is working properly.
