I searched several MS outlook newsgroups on this site and did a google search
of internet and found only one refernece to a ".mbkp" file (see below). This
file first appeared on my computer 8/2/07, about a week after i installed a
trial disk backup program. The .mbkp file is named just like the .pst file
but with .mbkp added (so it is outlook.pst.mbkp). It is the same size as the
..pst file when first formed but does not change often, like the pst file
does. I can delete (after backing it up) and it stays away gone for awhile
then comes back. I think it may be associated with the trial backup software
and have asked the company (no response in several days), so wanted to ask
this group if you have ever heard of this file extension.

The trial backup is memeo autoback (at memeo.com). I did not have it on
today when this mbkp file appeared back in my folder where i keep the pst
file (I have it in my documents for easy backup). My next step is to delete
ithe file AND delete the memeo program and see what happens. Memeo is
version 2.6 but it is undergoing some rapid change and I went through about
3-4 revisions in the last month. On the other hand, there is no direct
relationship to memeo as the .mbkp file (could it be short for memeo back
up?) appeard when the probem was not running (or so i thought). So what was
the one reference i found on internet to a .mbkp file - it was in the user
forum for the memeo back up program, where a user wrote in and was wondering
where this file came from (after he began using memeo). The company response
in the user group was that memeo does not build .mbkp files.

So, this is a mystery for me - any thougths on what this file is and where
it comes from?

bkp is a common extension for backup - do you have any other backup
programs? what is the created date of the file?

m(emeo)b(a)ck(u)p = "mbkp"
It would appear to be an auto backup app, so I guess it is running in the
background, or as a service, consequently backing up daily.

Thank you for the quick replies. Both of you suggested it is some type of
backup file and that was my conclusion too - and the m probably indicates
memeo product. I note to one comment - the mbkp file does not update daily
or when the pst file updates - it can go by several days. However, the memeo
people said they do not write such a file. Most importantly, both of you did
NOT indicate that this has anything to wo with outlook or windows; if that is
the case, then i have eliminated one small possibilty i considered - was it
something that came from a microsoft source.

So, at this point it indeed looks like it is memeo product. I have just
replaced that product with Norton Ghost, and will delete memeo from by
computer - I will get back in here after a week or so and tell what happens
to the mbkp file.

i just started to note these files. interesting thing is that i've been using memeo for two years or so without ever experiencing one of these. what has changed for me is that i've recently installed the office 2007 suite (still using xp os). two things besides this temporal relationship make me think it might be something associated with office 2007: (1) it is fond of appending a fourth character to file extensions (e.g., .docx instead of .doc), something i saw rarely if ever before; and (2) mbkp could be m(icrosoft) b(ac)k (u)p...?

thanks
