Fostex MR8 users Gain question

Any MR8 users here? Got a question. My buddy, who's doing some "demos", has trouble getting (what he thinks is) a strong/loud enough end result. If the meters go into overload, it does of course distort. Any thoughts on getting "more" without the filth? Forgive me, as this is second hand inquiring, but he asked me to do it!
