I had a Trojan virus and downloaded virus exterminator. The computer now
only boots to the desktop and freezes. I do not have the CD so I made 6
floppy boot disks but I am not sure how to boot from them. Any help would be
appreciated.

Why don't you have the CD? If your system came with XP preinstalled, then
you will need the recovery disc, or whatever method your system manufacturer
provided - the recovery disc will be bootable, you may need to change the
bios order, however.

The floppies do nothing other than start the installation process. To
continue you will need the CD.

Can you get into Safe Mode? Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as
the computer is starting. If you can get into Safe Mode, run
TrendMicro's Sysclean. You will obviously have to get this and other
malware removal tools from a different, known-clean computer with an
Internet connection and a cd burner. If you cannot even get into Safe
Mode, the quickest and most efficient thing to do is to take the
machine to a good local professional, not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of
store. Have them retrieve any data you forgot to back up and clean the
system.

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files. Delete all Temporary and
Temporary Internet Files before running the program.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

After you have done your scan with Sysclean, get a full-featured av,
install it, update it, and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode.

Put disk 1 in the floppy drive; restart your system, adjust the BIOS to boot
from Floppy drive first (if necessary although Floppy; hard drive; CD is the
usual order (or default) for boot devices.

insert the other disks as and when prompted. If they are the 'recovery'
disks they should allow a repair install etc from the CD.
