Formatting pictures on page.

Ok, so I have a web page that was created with Publisher 2000. When I open
it on FP it's all formatted really weird, but I want to keep the pictures
and text. When I remove all the columns and rows, all I have is empty space
but for some reason when I try to position the pictures and text the same
way they were before, I CAN'T!!! They all obey their own rules, they either
have to be centered, left or right!

How do I position the pictures so they are not all in a row, I want to
arrange them visually attractive, I don't want rows and rows of pictures.
Please help!

Scrap the page made with Publisher, and create it in FrontPage.

HI! I agree with both other post. most of the time its easier and faster to
start over from fresh then to modify an existing page made in another
programs. and using tables is the way the go. especially now with FP 2003
with the added functions for table and layouts.

Well, that's all fine and dandy, except... what if I don't want to place the
pictures according to the table? What if I want to visually locate a
picture on the page, without having to know how many pixels from the edge of
the page it should be?

If I start a new page, it still does it. Seems I can't place the objects
where I want them. They either have to be left, right or center of the page
or the table. I don't get it. Someone please explain in detail?

Thanks.

Absolute positioning is not well support in all browsers/versions/resolutions, so viewer of your
site could see images sitting on top of text, etc., using tables eliminate this problem no matter
which browser/version they are using.

That's the way it is. Take time to learn how to use tables effectively
....with padding, spacing etc. And be sure not to use Absolute Positioning
.... it sounds like a good idea, but as has been pointed out, it doesn't work
very well.
FP has a number of things in it that sound good but aren't. The photo
gallery component is another that doesn't work well ... and they didn't fix
it for the latest version of FP 2003.

I have been working with sites that have a lot of images, and tables are by
far the best way to go. you can create template that have tables already in
them to your choice ( for top logo's and advertise ect...) and you can use
the size in % percentage values so even different screen resolutions wont
affect the way they are presented on the page when the user views it.

There is now even more power using tables with the new FP 2003, look at the
layout tables and cell features, I used to switch between macromedia
dreamweaver and FrontPage before because DW had better table functionality
but now FP2003 has incorporated the table and cell layout feature that DW
has. now I only use FP 2003.

Take a couple days away from you present site and work on a test page using
tables and try out different things. you will see that in a very short time
that you will be able to achieve your goal and with ease. take our advice,
the time taken will not be in vain. :)
