It is easy to see that you have put a great amount of thought and
design prowess into your website.. however, some comments are in
order..
How to format a hard drive and reload a opearting system.
1. You really must check your website for any errors.. any sloppy
mistakes demonstrate that you do not work too precisely.. re. the
word 'operating'
---------
Key:
C = Hard Drive
D = CD Drive
2. The key is fine as long as that is the configuration.. in many
cases, it may well be as you indicated, but not always..
---------
Boot up your computer in dos mode
3. New users to XP are told that there is no DOS and, unless they have
loaded Windows 9x, will have no idea how to do this from your
instructions so far..
----------
type in:
format c:
4. You have not made the point that summarily formatting the drive
will effectively wipe everything out.. address books, e-mail
identities, everything..
-----------
if your installing 2000 or xp go into bios and change your boot
sequence to cd first. put in the cd and restart the computer.
5. More grammar and spelling errors.. very unprofessional.. the user
is also left wondering what 'bios' is, how to get into it, and what
to look for when there.. and then there is the question of the 'cd'..
what CD?.. is the CD
a.. of the type supplied to 'recover to factory' in which case a
simple reboot may not work..
b. a retail UPGRADE XP CD that will boot but will NOT find any
qualifying product because the format wiped it out..
c. a FULL RETAIL XP CD which will boot and install or upgrade..
d. an OEM XP CD that will boot and wipe out anything on the drive..
e. or worst case, they have no XP CD of any type..
------------
if not then put in the cd and put in this:
cd d:\ setup
6. Windows 98 boot diskettes when booting to DOS never set the CD
drive to the letter D: .. D is set as a RAM drive allocated for the
tools that will do the job, and R is generally the first letter given
to any incumbent CD drive.. the command 'setup' works for Win 9x, but
are you sure that it works for XP.. there is a six diskette set
downloadable from Microsoft, or a special diskette available from
www.bootdisk.com that will start the XP load procedure for computers
that are uable to boot from CD, and neither allows for just typing
'setup'..
-----------
follow the instructions
7. The part that requires the user to make choices that they are most
likely NOT going to understand, and you just brush this part off in
three words..
-------------
We have all given out bad or misleading advice at some time.. it
happens.. but if you really want to help others, try to ensure that
the information you provide is comprehensive and and that any
procedure works..
Here is a link to a professional website that deals with the issues
that you have tried to address on your site..
http://michaelstevenstech.com/
Take a really good look.. Michael Stevens has produced a site that
does not leave the reader in any doubt as to what to do next..
I doubt that you will ever get close to his high standards.. all
credit to you 'ere you should but in the meantime, ask Geocities to
remove your site, and continue to read, look at the work of others,
and get more 'hands on' experience before you try to emulate them..
I trust that we will see you around the newsgroups in the future,
learning a bit and advising a bit as we all do..
