I trying to format my hardrive but I'm getting this
message :
format cannot run because the volume is in use by
another process. format may run if this volume is
desmounted first.ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD
THEN BE INVALID.would you like to force a dismount on
this volume?
but when I put "y" it gives me another message :
cannot lock the drive. the volume is still in use.
what should I do to format my c:/ drive?

Duhhh

what should I do to format my c:/ drive?

You can't format the HD if the OS or the pagefile is on C: - it would be
asking the OS to commit suicide, and Isaac Asimov wrote some rule that
prevents that.

Boot off the OS install CD. You can format C: from the install (I'm doing
it right now on another machine).

format is a dos (disk operating system) based application. if you want to
do so, you need to boot using dos and run format. however, you can't do
this if your hard drive is using ntfs as opposed to fat 16 or fat 32.

if you want to reformat your hard drive and then install windows xp, then
just pop in your winxp cd and then install windows. you would have the
option of formatting your drive, thus, everything on the drive will be lost.

hope this helps.

You cannot format a drive from an operating system that is installed on
that drive. Boot with your Windows XP installation CD and format from
there.

You realize, of course, that you can't format a drive when you are actively
using it - such as when you are in Windows! You format the drive during the
install procedure, after booting from the Windows XP CD!

Assuming that you want to reinstall Windows XP, just boot from
the Windows XP CD and follow the prompts for a clean
installation. It will do the reformat for you.

You can find detailed instructions here:

Hello, I am also trying to reinstall windows xp over xp.
I tried to do this from original disk, but it saves
everything that I am trying to delete. How do I get
everything off the disk to start over?

Select install when the XP CD boots, select the existing
install and delete the partition.

Sorry, but if you notice the time between our posts I didn't see your

That would be understandable, except that the message you replied
to included my message as a quote. If you had simply read what
you were replying to, you would have seen it.

But no big deal. We are all guilty of sometimes reading messages
too fast.

LOL, I see what you mean now but honesty Davagirl is the only one I seen at
the time. While I'm here I would like to say thanks to you and the other
knowledgeable people who contribute. I learn a lot from reading in these
