Format, autoformat removes paragraph markers

Using word 2002, using autoformat on a 38 page document to activate
hyperlinks. This document was not originally created in word. When viewing
the styles for the document, they all show as normal. After doing the
format, autoformat the styles change and paragraph markers are removed and
text spacing is incorrect. I have the Preserve Styles checked under Tools,
Autocorrect Options, Autoformat checked. Is there a way to keep the
autoformat from removing paragraph markers? I've tried reviewing the
autoformatting changes, but I am unable to reject the change for removing the
paragraph marker. This is a process that is used daily for posting the
document on our intranet. It takes a lot of time to either put the paragraph
markers back in or individually autoformat the hyperlinks in the document.

Any insight into autoformatting, especially from the format menu would be
appreciated.

The only paragraph marks I've seen AutoFormat remove are those for empty
paragraphs. Are you using empty paragraphs to create "blank lines"?

You say the document wasn't originally created in Word. It sounds as if
there are still some conflicting "codes" in your document. Click on Tools
and Options and the Compatability tab to see what it says there. I think I
would copy the entire document and paste it into Wordpad to clean it up and
then copy it again and paste it back into a new Word document and format it
the way I wanted it. I'm betting that once you "clean" the document, it will
behave for you.

I hope this was helpful to you.

Yes, that is how these documents come in from the automated process.

I did a quick test and selected the whole document and then did format,
paragraph and set the spacing after to 12 pt. Now when I use the format,
autoformat function the spacing stays as it should. Didn't realize that
paragraph markers were indicators of empty paragraphs. Most staff press
enter to create the blank line between paragraphs instead of changing the
paragraph spacing as the normal style doesn't do this by default.

Thanks!
