Form Email HTML options

J

John Howell

I've been strugling for several years with formatting for
Emailed results for forms.

The format I prefer (easiest for me to read) is to use
the HTML Definition List.

Problem? Long forms get truncated.

I have been advised on this forum by two different
individuals that "HTML formats are NOT supported by the
FrontPage Form handler for Email" and that there is a
2048-character limit on the size of those submissions
(which explains the truncation)!

SO -- MY QUESTION IS -- How come those formats are
OFFERED (currently in FP2003, and previously in FP2002,
FP2000 and earlier) if they are not supported. (There
are FOUR HTML formats listed for Email results.)

There is NOTHING in the documentation about a problem,
and nothing in Jim Buyens very detailed FP2003 InsideOut
[a SUPERB RESOURCE, by the way!] about it.

If this is a problem, is there a work-around? A Patch?

With all the gazillions of people using FP, surely there
MUST be more to offer here than "it's not supported"!

First, there are not FP2003 extensions. FP2003 support the same features that requires the
extensions as FP2002.

See:

Another option is to not use the FP Form Handler if you want to process form data via email in HTML
format, instead you will need to use a custom Form Handler written in a server-side scripting
language that support sending HTML emails.

All software components, FrontPage or otherwise, have limitations.
If you need to exceed those limitations, you have to take some
other approach. The FrontPage Save Results component is no exception.

Personally, I use the approach described at:

Mailing Form Data

That, however, requires a Windows Web server and the ability to
do simple programming. If those requirements post a problem, I
suggest browsing around your host's support pages to see if
they provide a non-FrontPage form mailer that better suits your
needs.
