Forcing more accurate DNS lookup

Rob

Hey all,

I hope someone here can help me--this isn't the most ideal forum for
this question (I dont think).

I have a computer at home, and my ISP assigns me a dynamic IP
address. So, I use a service known as DYNU (www.dynu.com) to get my
IP address. The problem is that, if my home IP address changes, it
seems the DNS server for the university from which I access my home
computer caches the IP address way too long, and so I am unable to
connect because it keeps thinking the IP address it wrong.

Is there anyway I can configure windows to contact a specific DNS
server for all addresses of the form *.DYNU.com, and avoid the
university's DNS server FOR THIS ADDRESS ONLY, entirely?

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

Does the UNI use a proxy server or appliance to access the 'net? If so, that
would be a pain as the caching is probably done at that point.
Maybe get your home system to email you its WAN IP every half hour?

No, you can't do that by the nature of DNS. However, as someone says,
you can get your IP address mailed to you every morning, and if you are
any good at scripting, you could put that in your 'hosts' file.

The DNS service takes 24 to 48 hours for the IP address to DNS entry
to be updated. I do not use DYNU.org but I have had great success
with DYNDNS.ORG. They have a free service also.

I think you'll find that the main problem here is that Dynu's DNS and
other services are broken and I believe the company has essentially
'shut up shop' and is totally uncontactable.

To prove this, try using nslookup and set the server to ns.dynu.com -
I think you'll find that it is their servers that are not updating
rather than any problem with caching.
