"force a dismount"

P

Paula Allton

Running XP Pro SP3.

System was fried by lightening thru the phone line, requiring replacement of
HDs and other components. I want to format my back-up drive (E:) that we
loaded all my info on that was salvageable.

When trying to format E:, get message do I want to force a dismount. All
connection handles will no longer work.

Do I say yes? Will this cause problems with programs running on the C:
drive?

Thanks,
Paula

You must dismount the volume if you want to format it, this will not
affect other drives or volumes. Of course, you already know that all
the files on the E: drive will be lost when you format it.

Sure you can dismount it and format it...
but if all your backup data is on it...
you do NOT want to format it!

Thanks for the replies.

I was told I need to reformat by the repair group because the info on E: is
what we could salvage from the damaged HD. It includes program files so my
system has two operating systems on it (both being XP PRO).

I want to have a clean HD to backup my system now.

If you format your E: drive that will totally erase it...
so be sure there is *nothing* on it your need!

If you have trouble dismounting it,
simply reboot the machine and do not access the drive

Forcing a dismount of a drive simply disconnects it from the operating
system. It will be remounted by the next Restart or upon completion of
whatever dismounted it.

Dismounting one drive will have no effect on any other drives.

Just be sure that any data you want on a drive you are going to format
has been saved/copied to another location because it will all be erased
via the format operation.
