Format c drive

I am trying to format c drive using DOS. My operating system is Windows 2000
Pro.

Ater I type "format c:"

I get message stating "Foramt cannot run because volume is in use by another
process. Format may run if theis volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED
HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a
dismount on this volume?

When I type y and press enter I get the message "Cannot lock the drive. The
volume is still in use".

How do I work around this and format drive?

Rather than cut and paste and seem like the credit is mine for the answer, I
went to a search engine and used your question in quotes and came up with
this:

That is probably what you're looking for. Basically it's telling you to
either get the 4 floopy boot disks and use that or to do it from the CD
after changing your computer to boot from CD if it's not already enabled.

You cannot format C from the OS you are running from - thereby removing
it from underfoot

You have to do it from a separate boot. In the case of Windows XP (and
this is an XP not a Win2000 group) this is done by booting the Windows
CD and entering setup. I think 2000 is similar but not sure

It sounds like you're trying to format the drive containing the
system volume from within Win2K. You can't. This would be the computer
equivalent of sawing off the tree limb you're sitting on, and Win2K is
"too smart" to allow this.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
