You guys ofer great advice, and have used it and will continue to use it, so I need your help with this one. I know I'm not alon on this - Whenever I try to go to lava, mvp, or any of the web sites you suggest, I get a Page can't displayed message. I have tried the settings you told me about 3d party downloads, I've downloaded cwshredder and used it, not for sure if it works or not, because I'm still getting the same error. I feel the frustration of the scum, parasites and ads out there and want them gone forever!!!! HA HA. I have downloaded mozilla and typed in the web address and get the same message.......Can anyone PLEASE offer any further guidance and if push comes to serve and if I have to buy a software to get rid of these things and stop them, I'll do it - but can someone PLEASE recommend a good program that I can buy, that will stop the madness!!

Your scumware is blocking pages that can download stuff to remove it. Try to
get Ad-Aware from another source, like Tucows or CNet.

Try this: http://www.tucows.com/preview/236049.html

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.
If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Kevin,
"hit.lookupanything.biz/apps/eps/eps.cgi?"
That's a version of "New.Net" [ugh!] "hit.lookupanything.biz" = qsrch.net
(New.Net)

Look in your Control Panel | Add Remove
Uninstall New.Net from there ...
Note: do NOT attempt to remove it manually, or you will lose your Internet
Connection!

Mike

I went to control panel and the New.net program was not there. I did locate the folder, it denied me access or I could not delete it.....Spyware blaster could not even remove it, any other suggestions...........

The Blaster did get rid of other things, so it helped but not with that one folder....

Kevin,
"Spyware blaster could not even remove it"
SpywareBlaster is NOT a removal tool, it is a "prevention" tool.

Install Ad-Aware (see below)

Your scumware is blocking pages that can download stuff to remove it.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know things were getting that bad.
There is something really wrong with a system that makes that sort of
thing possible. Shouldn't there be permission levels within the
system that warned you before something like that could be done?

Anyone willing to defend windows on this?

Yes, I'll defend Windows. Try building a house that is burglar-proof. Make
that house as big and complex as Windows is, with as many rooms as Windows
has subsystems, and as many doors and windows and chimneys and fire escapes
and servants' entrances and patios and balconies and ventilation ducts as
Windows has openings to the outside world, and see whether your house is
still burglar-proof.

Then add a couple of butlers and maids and a few other people who can open
the door and be conned by a spiel that says "Would you like to install and
run this bitchin' program that's just super-duper and does everything you
want including making tacos for breakfast and best of all it's FREE!" and
they just click OK without thinking like you probably did and got your
computer infected.

As far as I've seen, Microsoft is keeping on top of security problems as
well as it's possible to do. Keep your system updated with the latest from
Microsoft, and when you see that little screen that says "Do you want to
install and run..." click Hell No! unless you know where that program is
coming from.

And never, ever accept any updates that come through email and claim to be
from Microsoft. If you get one of those, it is bogus for sure. Microsoft
NEVER sends updates via email.

The problem is that an operating system should not be some sort of
rambeling mansion. That is something that got cobbled togetehr with
no real plan in response to first this and then that demand from
marketing and the desire to take over the rest of the software world.

The problem grew out of trying to make an operating system something
it should not be in order to capture more and more software markets.

What it "shouldn't" be? Who's to say what that is? The customers, I assume.
Customers want to browse the internet, and they want all those other
features.

Anyone who doesn't want those features can certainly go back to CP/M, or
MS-DOS 2.0, or DRDOS, or Commodore 64. I had a C-64 for years, and never got
a single virus. Rebooting took about three seconds, even with a 2 MHz 8-bit
processor. For a while, the entire Macintosh operating system could fit on
two or three floppies, and not high-density ones either.

But despite those obvious advantages of simpler operating systems, I still
prefer modern Windows. So does everyone else, including you I'll bet.

(I haven't spent much time with Linux. Maybe I'll get around to it some day.
But it seems unlikely that it will be able to do everything Windows can do,
and still be "simple".)
