A non-expectd and not programed user name and password
box comes up when the submit button is activated on
http://libertyships.org/join.htm and same happens when
the search function on
http://libertyships.org/searchmain.htm page is activited.
I have reset the permissions on the admin program of FP
and there are no protected folders or subwebs on the
site. I can reload these pages to the server and for one
time each will work as it should. Next time the password
box is back.

Help would be appreciated to correct this problem.

Since you are hosting on an Apache /UNIX with extensions:
Date: Fri, 29 Oct 2004 20:15:26 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.33 (Unix) FrontPage/5.0.2.2634a

You will need to open the web masters control panel and set / modify the permissions settings there,
as "permissions" don't publish when you publish your web.

You will need to give the server "write" permissions for the results files for your form: join.txt.
( I didn't check the other form ) In Apache?UNIX these permissions settings are 666

Additionally, I might suggest you save this join.txt file in a password protected directory, because
if I were to place http://libertyships.org/join.txt in my browser address bar and click go I will
be reading all of your submissions.

On Apache?UNIX to create a password protected directory, create a folder inside the web, publish
then open the Web Masters CPanel, Open either Web Protect or Password Protect directories depending
on the version and then apply the password protection to the new folder.

And also, are you receiving the email version?? If not it's because you are sending it to an
address that is not part of the libertyships.org domain such as (e-mail address removed)

The server Administration settings in FrontPage will not let you set permissions for individual
files on Apache/UNIX.
( at least I couldn't just now )

But, what if a non-expert has the answer?
Would you allow them to reply?

No, that's why I said disregard my suggestion to password protect it "if" it is in the _private
folder.

I looked at his form online and was concerned that it was being saved to the root.

I sure welcome any response from those who feel they have
an answer based on EXPERIENCE, not "maybe this will work."

And a great "thank you" to all who have responded.

Russ Tucker

I have done all that has been suggested with all
permissions set at the server level to anonymous and
verified by usage. There are no subwebs, no protected
folders on the site. The problem remains the same.

Is there an answer out there?

The following is a relay from a posting on
the "programming" section for those who may not have seen
it there and an attempt to find a solution to this now 2
month old problem:

Sorry for the caption, but I have presented this problem
on this board before (been at this problem for over a
month) with no special caption.

I have the ability to reset the extensions from the
cPanel, as well all other resets suggested and have done
them several times. The server host says the problem is
in the .htaccess files, with no other assistance
forthcoming as I understand he is not Tech Support for my
problem beyond making sure the server is fuctioning as it
should.

Thus, it has come down to a problem for those who truely
know FP 2003. Would anyone know if I can delete
all .htaccess files in all folders and reload the site up
to the server?

Russ Tucker

When something goes this "deep", you may have to dump everything off the
server, re-create your web, extensions, permissions etc. and then do a
re-publish.

I'm sure there is some way to fix it without going to the extreme but you
don't _really_ know what's wrong.

The most expedient fix is above.

FWIW, you've got a c-panel and HTACCESS, so you're on a UNIX server. the
fact that the admins aren't really into helping you would indicate that it's
time to get a new host.
Check out a friend's hosting: http://arendkay.net/ I'd also recommend a
windows server (for compatibility), not that a UNIX won't work, but the
Windows server just "jives" better with the FrontPage extensions and
components.

Chris,

My thanks for your reply and assistance. Truely there are
some experts on this forum.

I shall try the "total" dump and load suggestion.

Regards,

Russ Tucker

it's not really the correct fix, but there's a law of "diminishing returns"
on trying to find _exactly_ what's going on.

If it persists beyond this, you will either have to get a new host or live
with it. I don't know if I mentioned it before but Eugene at
www.arendkay.net is excellent.

On http://libertyships.org/join.htm you have
<!--WEBBOT BOT=SaveResults U-File="join.txt"
The root web normally does not have write permissions
Move join.txt (it must exist) to the _private folder (which by default has write permissions) and change your form properties to
point to the new location for it
- also check w/ your host if they allow emails to be sent by the server to addresses outside of the domain

For your search form open your online site in FP, open the search page and check the properties, then save it and run a tools
recalculate hyperlink to see if FP will rebuild the catalog

Stefan,

Thanks for the suggestions which I will do. Every bit of
new information helps find the solution.

BTB, the strangest thing is both problem pages will work
exactly as advertised on the first useage after both
pages are reloaded to the server. From then on the
problem is there. And yes, from this one time correct
action the mail is sent to my outside domain address.

Thanks,
