In a previous question by another user, you asked that user:

"Did it come with a WinXP operating system disk or a restore disk?
you referenced in the post."

Does this mean that the WinXP operating system disk is different from a
restore disk? I have to 'restore' my OS (an XP WMC Version 2005 edition).
It's a Gateway Athlon computer bought at Circuit City. I got a virus and have
been locked out of WINDOWS and was going to do a REPAIR but was told that
because my OS was pre-installed there was not REPAIR option with this system.
I want to back up the system before I do anything, and now it seems that the
WINXP operating system disc which came with the computer is not the same as a
'restore' disk, if I understand you correctly. If so, can a restore disk be
used on my computer? Also, does the operating system disc which did come with
the system have a driver and applications included, or do I need to obtain a
separate disk for that as well?

The difference between a restore disk and an XP operating system disk is the
restore disk will restore the system to the same configuration it was in
when the computer was new. This includes all the "crap" programs that are
typically installed by OEMs. The operating system disk will probably not
have the drivers for all your hardware and it will do a "repair"
installation.

I have yet to see a virus that keeps me from getting into a computer. I
recently worked on one that had in excess of 100 virus, Trojans, malware,
keyboard loggers and a root kit. I thought at first I was not going to get
the PC to boot but it eventually did. If you provide more details on the
problem and what you have tried, maybe somebody can help you fix this
without a reinstall.

The virus program was set up to delete the files. The virus was named
Userinit.exe, which apparently is the name of an integral file for access to
WINDOWS. I can access the computer, but it will not take me all the way into
WINDOWS, nor will it take me to safe mode with a command prompt.

The disk which came with is not a restore disk apparently, from the
description as it says that all data and files will be lost. I want to try to
save some of my files that were not backed up before this happened.

Thank you for the information.

Make yourself a free Knoppix CD and boot from that.
You will then be able to back up files using either a USB drive or a
network connection. After that, you can re-install windows.

Download my new userinit fix from here
http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm this file works for SP2 and
SP3 only. READ the enclosed instructions. If you have SP1 do not use this
file. If you need any other version then email me using the link at the
bottom of my webpage. Your issue is caused by a malware infestation. Once
fixed you will need to use my Remove-it software, it will remove that
malware from your system. Choose yes for all options when prompted. Download
it here http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm

Those instructions are wrong and incomplete and mis-leading. You can only
replace the userinit.exe file with the same version that corresponds to the
installed service pack. If you have SP1 installed you need the SP1 version
of the file. The same goes for SP2.
