OS restore disc

I am running a Gateway athlon system with WIN XP Media Center Edition Version
2005. Due to a virus which has locked me out of WINDOWS, I need to restore.
I have a couple of questions regarding the process and the disk that came
with my computer.

1. I was told by a Gateway tech that the recovery disk that came with my
system did NOT have the REPAIR option because the OS was pre-installed and
OEM which does not include the ability to REPAIR the damage; only to
completely restore.

This is why I want to do a backup of my system with the disk. Once I
initiate the back-up, how do I then intergrate the back-up into the new
restored OS?

2. Further information from the Gateway tech said that the drivers and
applications came on a separate disk. There was only ONE disk included with
the system when I bought it. How would I get the drivers and applications (or
would that be part of the backup)?

Any advice and help will be appreciated.

If the supplied disk is truly only a restore disk, then the drivers should be on the disk and the
process should be fully automatic through installing the OS and the drivers, plus most likely the
crap-ware they put on the computer too.
However, it would be a very good idea to go to the Gateway Support site for your make and model and
download the following drivers. Video, Sound, Modem, Network Interface, and any motherboard
drivers. Put these drivers on a CD. If your computer is not operational, you will need to ask a
friend to help you.

Also, if your computer is not operational, there will be no way for you to back up your system
(files) without removing your hard drive and mounting it in another computer as a slave, or getting
and external case and then attaching it to another computer. However, if your hard drive is
corrupted with a virus, I would never let you attach it to my computer. You may need to take it to
a technician for data recovery.
