gary for some reason my original post dissapeared. here it is again and you
had asked for thr exact error msg it follows. the name is changed but
eveything else is as written.

i can send mail too all my contacts but one the email is
(e-mail address removed)
mail tells me that it cant sned it because the addy does not exsist. it
tells me to check my security setting, which are obviously fine since the
other contacts can get the mail. i can send to this address useing webmail
with the same smtp server as is in my mail set up. the address in this email
is correct except for the first part. there is a period in the email between
first and last names. yes, i have tried it without.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject '',

Now that I have the full error message, the picture is becoming
clearer. The pertinent part is "Relay access denied."
The SMTP server you were sending from does not belong to the
network you were connecting from: computan.on.ca.
The general rule for port 25 SMTP is that the SMTP server must
belong to the same network as the one that connects you to the
Internet.

why then can i send other emails.
i've figured out that i can not send to ".on.ca" addresses. also when i
connect to web mail through computan to the other isps webmail website i can
send to any address.

Webmail does not use the port 25 SMTP protocol, so it is not
affected.

Besides webmail, your other two workarounds are:
1. Use the computan SMTP server, or
2. Get a free account with Gmail, configure it for POP access,
then use it for your sending chores. Gmail SMTP doesn't use
port 25.

While you are getting your Internet connection from Computan,
Computan is not going to block any of your usage of the Computan
SMTP server.
But as you saw in the error message below, while connected
to Computan, Cogeco will block at least some of your usage
of the Cogeco SMTP server. Different ISP's will implement
some of these conventions somewhat differently.
