font list in ppt 2003

Hello -- there is a similar question from early 2007, but I am hoping to
pursue the response a bit further.

I have a family of opentype fonts (franklin gothic) that includes 14 faces
(italic, condensed, heavy, etc), which I can work with easily enough in
Illustrator & Photoshop, but have problems with in Powerpoint. When I try to
access the font in Powerpoint, there are only 4 varieties of the font
available, not the family of 14 faces.

The previous response notes how Windows does not work well with font
families, but Adobe apps, in that they sort of handle the fonts themselves,
do a much better job.

Wondering if anyone is aware of any fix/solution to make the wider variety
of faces available in PowerPoint. THANKS!

Install them into the fonts folder as with any Windows font and they *should*
become available. You won't be able to choose Franklin Gothic and then see a
menu of variations. You'll have to choose eg. Franklin Gothic Medium Cond from
the font menu then choose any needed attributes (Bold, Italic or both).

You mention that you can see them in Illo and Photoshop ... what about other
Windows applications, non-Adobe ones? Try WordPad for example.

If you can see the add'l fonts only in Adobe apps, it seems likely that they've
been installed in Adobe's private fonts directory, where only Adobe apps will
find them. If that's the case, you should be able to remove the fonts from the
folder where Adobe's installed them and install them into the normal Windows
fonts folder; that should make the fonts available to all apps.

There's only one reason I can think of to account for why Adobe plays this
weird li'l game, and for any version of Windows after Win 2000, the reason's no
longer valid. Go figure.
