Font issues

Cross-posted; problem seems to be associated to both areas?
Searching reveals no help.

Probable culprit: Runing Family Tree Maker (FTM) for win95/98 without
realizing it. Problem did not occur with installation, nor with importing a
gedcom file, but after a short period of time using its features to make
revisions.

Email & Newsgroups:
No Bold/Regular fonts in Subject lines to show whether it has been read or
not.
In body: No "regular" font available; only Italic and Bold or Bold/Italic.
Italic not turned on, clicking it does nothing (in HTML mails). Same with
groups, though 99% of those are plain text.

Fusion, web authoring:
Refused to start because it didn't have a Verdana font.

All other apps -were- Italics only; no "regular" choices.

TS steps:
-- All Accessibility stuff is OFF (control panel; Accessibility settings)
-- All apps EXCEPT email/newsgroups seems to have "fixed" themselves.
-- Ran chkdsk all drives; ran boot.ini SOS mode. Chkdsk found no problems.
SOS mode is finding problems on a data drive and fixed them. Has happened
twice so far. Otherwise all drives are declared "clean" of other Restarts.
SOS never found any problems on the boot drive.
-- ShutDown/Restart not working. Gets to the blank screen with mouse
cursor, power never goes off or restart never happens; just freezes there.
-- Updated prior to use Antivirus, WinPatrol, Search & Destroy and Adaware
all coming up clean.
-- Bootup time is "normal" unless the SOS slows it for disk checks.
-- Shutdown time is "normal" up to the point of the freeze.
-- UPHclean and Bootvis are installed and run.

As near as I can tell, ALL above issues are the only ones. Everything else
seems fine. I'm currently backing up (Imaging with Ghost 10) Drive C (boot
drive) to 4 DVDs, but ... it's just a precaution because I'm backing up with
these problems present <g>. Better this than nothing though if something
goes astray.

Excepting possibly the cold boot/restart problems, I have a feeling that
whatever is messing with the fonts in email and the groups is common to
everything. I've seen this before onthe groups but the only finds I come
across don't indicate whether any of it worked and I've already tried most
of them as evidenced here, I think.
I DID have a problem with administrative right too but that also seems to
have cured itself along the way. Strange.

Any relevant comments or thoughts or suggestions will be most happily
received. Besides the annoyance of these problems there is always the
possibility of it "growing" and impacting other things eventually, so ...

Thanks in advance to all who reply with relevant information!

Figures I'd forget something: Yes, I did, to two days prior to the first
install. Also did a Norton GoBack to the same date and approximate time.
No diffs; strange.

Ouch, was hoping there would be a fix in that. Sorry I don't have anything
else to suggest. Hopefully someone else will jump in here.

That can happen if Display Properties, Appearance, Advanced...
has those attributes for menu item. BTDT ; )

Perhaps you should just try a new Theme?

Good luck

Not sure just which Properties you're referring to, but Control Panel;
Display; Advanced; doesn't seem to have anything that helps. Most of the
possibilities don't have multiple font settings. In fact, only the Menu
item had them.
Without screwing up your own machine, could you be more specific about

Tried it; no luck though.

Thanks, appreciate your input!

Thanks, Robert! You're a gentleman and a scholar<g>; well, you know what I
mean.

I can't recall what it was set to, but in the Advanced Properties Display I
changed the font to Vedana and all straightened itself out. Unfortunately I
didn't take note of what it -was- set to, so I can't duplicate the symptoms;
easily, anyway. I'm just glad to have it working correctly again.

Thanks again for the kick; it worked out well.
