Everything is in italics. How do I get all fonts back to normal ??

This is actually a problem I am having with Windows Server 2003, but I am
sure that the solution is the same as XP.

When I applied SP2 for Windows Server 2003, around this time last year,
every font turned to italics - the Start Menu, context menus, all text in
applications, Event Viewer, Device Manager, IIS Manager, all wizards and
dialogue boxes, title bars, icons text, etc. Even the nearly all the text
in websites when using IE7 or Firefox is in italics (it does not appear in
italics in the rare cases where the CSS calls for 'normal'). The only thing
that is not in italics is the Command Prompt.

I have been using it for a year thinking that this was normal. I thought it
was some really stupid change that Microsoft made for SP2.

When looking at the Appearance tab in Display Properties, all the other
themes have fonts in italics as well. I cannot find any way to get it back
to normal.

Could there be a registry key that makes this universal, system wide change
to italics?

Cheers

Thanks - that was helpful. It looks like my Arial font is actually missing.

Can anybody give me a list of fonts from their Windows Server fonts folder
please? I have:

Yes, I think you're missing the Arial font, but I also think you're missing
the Tahoma font, which is causing the problem.

I'll upload the two fonts in a min.

Here you go, I've uploaded the Arial, Tahoma and Tahoma Bold fonts:

Thanks a lot! Everything is back to normal now, as far as I can see.

I have figured out why this has happened every time I have installed SP2,
and therefore why I thought having these italic fonts was normal.

What I did on the base image that I have used before SP2, was make write
disallow permissions on the font folder for administrator and users. This
is so that I know when an application installer attempts to write to the
fonts folder, so that I can temporarily allow writes, and then remove those
added fonts.

I like to keep the server ultra-neat and clean. With that level of
attention to detail I find that they keep rock-steady for years.

Whereas an application installer will stop when it cannot write to the fonts
folder (I do not think I have actually installed anything that tries to add
fonts), the SP2 Windows Update installer obviously does not.

SP2 must have had some updated fonts included. The installer must have
deleted the old ones, without being able to add the replacements.

Could somebody please send me a directory list of the fonts in SP2, so that
I can make sure I have all of the ones that I need (being reasonably sure
there are no extra ones from applications)? The file dates should tell me
which ones are the ones that have been updated for SP2.

Cheers

I clicked on the link that you provided and I got redirected to a page

Does the original poster have to take the test -- and get all the other
silent downloads -- in order to get the fonts that he needs?

It worked fine for me. If there was any rubbish that came up, it would have
been blocked by the HOSTS file that I use.
