Font and text editing options disappear

When I hit reply or forward to an e-mail message, all of the format text
options dark and become unusable. The only thing I notice is that these
e-mail says "plain text" at the top. On other e-mails where this does not
happen (and I can still edit the font, etc.) it says "HTML".
