Folder views

I have Windows XP and can't seem to get it to do what I
could with Windows 98, so I hope someone can help!
I have icons on my desktop that open folders in a window.
I shrink the window down to a small size and set the
folder to show files within it as icons, then I close the
folder. When I click on the desktop icon again, the window
opens and looks exactly as I left it, which is great.
However, once I have rebooted my PC a couple of times and
then go into the same folder by clicking the desktop icon,
the folder view has changed back to its default, which
tends to be a huge window and the files list in 'detail'
view.
This never used to happen - what am I doing wrong?
I've checked the 'folder options' section in Control Panel
and the 'remember each folder's view' option is marked.
It might be that I like to see some folders in detail view
and others in 'icon' view, and the software seems to get
confused?
Hmmm... Shouldn't I be able to have different settings for
different folders, and shouldn't each setting be
remembered? Or is there a flag I need to adjust somewhere
to enable all this?
Help gratefully received...
Thanks.

Folder Options overview

With Folder Options, you can specify how your folders
function and how content is displayed.

For example, you can indicate that you want your folders
to display hyperlinks to common tasks, other storage
locations, and detailed file information. You can also
choose to open items with either a single or a double
click.

You can change the program that opens a file type. You
can also change the items that appear on your desktop.

To change folder options settings, open Folder Options in
Control Panel. Or, to open Folder Options from a folder
window, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.

Note

Changes you make in Folder Options apply to the
appearance of folder contents. However, Folder Options
settings do not apply to the folder toolbars. For
information about changing folder toolbars, click Related
Topics.

Thanks for the reply...
But why is it that I open folders up one day from the
desktop and they are set to show as icons and then the
next day they have returned to the default view?
