folder tasks displayed on desktop

Can anyone tell me how to get the folder tasks bars off of
my destop. I have a white bar with the following bars,
folder tasks,other places and details,on the whole left
side and no matter what I do I can't seem to remove it off
my desktop. Can someone help me get off my desktop.
