common tasks on desktop

Somehow my desktop is displaying the common tasks bar
along the left side. (folder tasks, other places,
details). This is on my DESKTOP. I can't get rid of it.
I've unchecked show common tasks under tools-folder
options-general, and I've Also, tried under system
properties-advanced-performace settings-use common tasks
in folders. But nothing. The computer is clean of
viruses and spyware. Also, Windows Explorer does not open
nor does folder options icon in control panel. What is
this, and how do I get rid of it?

Well, that worked. Thank YOU! What did it do? I know it
registered some kind of security for shell32, what's
the "/i" do? Also, there's another user on this computer
that has an internet explorer bar on the right side. Any
ideas? Thanx again.

security for shell32

No. Does not create any security or something. The /i parameter calls the DllInstall function of a COM object. Without the /i parameter, the DllRegisterServer funciton is called instead. The entire command repairs the XP settings;resets hundreds of registry key to defaults. One of which is it removes the Common Tasks (bug) in Desktop...Simplest way as I discovered it ;-) (oops, no! David Candy discovered it), as accurate as Glenn McGrath ;-)

The IE bar seems to be a different issue. More info needed on that.
