I have a broadband internet connection and I have set up a home network. I
have a cable modem which plugs into a router with 3 computers connected to
it. All the machines are running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2. I
enabled file sharing on all the machines. I have set up folders to share
on each machine. Previously, all 3 machines had no problems when it cames to
sharing folders. This has changed and I can't pinpoint what has happened.

Now, each machine is able to see all 3 members of the workgroup. Machines #1
And #2 can access the shared folders from each other but can't access the
shared folders of machine #3. When they try the get the following message.
"#3 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions" However Machine #3 can access the shared folders of
#1and #2.

The TCP\IP properties for all 3 machines are set up to obtain an IP address
automatically. In the advanced TCP\IP settings, the NetBIOS setting under
the WINS tab is set for "Enable NetBIOS over TCP\IP. I have tried stopping
and restarting "computer Services" from the Services Management Console. I
have also tried disabling Windows firewall as well as McAfee firewall.
However the problem still remains.

I am able to ping machine #3 from #1 and #2. Also I have made sure that the
guest account is turned on #3. I have set up different passwords on ## for
the administrator account. I have set up a password for the administrator
account when #3 is in safe mode. There is no password for the administrator
account when #3 is running regularly.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Assuming that you log on as wale23/xxx, make sure that the
account wale23/xxx exists on each and every machine. Don't
use blank passwords and don't use guest accounts.

I tried your suggestion. I set up an account for machine #1 on
machine #3. I logged into machine#1 under that account. I then tried
to click on #3's icon in the workgroup window. I got the same error
message. Machine #1 does not have an account set up for machine#3.
Even so I am still able to access shared folders on #1 from machine
#3.

Any other suggestions?

You don't set up accounts for machines as you suggest; you
set them up for users!

To determine where you stand, you need to do this on PC1:

net user > c:\PC1.txt {Enter}
notepad c:\PC1.txt {Enter}

Now do the same thing on PC3 and paste the data into
your reply. Make sure to flag the data so that we know
which is which. The results should be interesting...

By way of background, machine #3's user was changing the system time

adminstrator accounts. The first was just called administrator and was
password protected. Using this first account, I changed the security
properties for timedate.cpl. The second account is also an
administrator account called Bess Allison and is not password

under the Bess Allison and they don't see the administrator account

When I tried to run cmd in regular mode, the command prompt would not

Your posted problem is that you are unable to access shared
share folders between PCs. You have since told us what
accounts you have but you haven't told us which account you
log on with when attempting to share folders. Which one is it?

AFAIK, you can't use accounts with blank passwords when
accessing shared folders.

folders. First machine#3 was logged into the Bess allison account I
got the same measage denying me access to machine #3. Then I logged
into william eckstein account on machine#3. I went back to machine#1
and still couldnt get access to machine#3.

Perhaps I am missing something simple. I am not trying to access
shared folders from the same machine. I am trying to access network
shared folders across the LAN. I dont see where user accounts have an
impact. I would appreciate any other help you can provide

Assuming that you log on as wale23/xxx, make sure that the
account wale23/xxx exists on each and every machine. Don't
use blank passwords and don't use guest accounts.

Instead of repeating myself, I will explain the issue in general
terms by describing a situation that you might find in a factory.

When you try to walk into the factory's secure area then you
need to identify yourself. If your credentials are unknown
then you get challenged. If they are known then you can
move on.

WinXP is a secure operating system. It has a number of
accounts (set up by you!). If some other PC tries to access
a WinXP share via a network connection then it can do
so unchallenged only if it supplies suitable credentials in the
form of your current logon account name / password. If it
does not supply such credentials then it will be challenged.

PC3 tells you that the PC1 credentials are not acceptable.
This is expected, because you identify yourself as "william
eckstein" on PC1 (by virtue of logging on as "william eckstein",
and because no "william eckstein" account exists on PC3
as your subsequent post showed us. That's why I keep
saying that you must create a "william eckstein" account
on PC3, with a password that matches the one used when
logging on to PC1.

There are some other possible mechanisms that might
lock you out but there is little point talking about them until
the account/password issue is properly resolved.

I noted in one of your previous posts that you were unable
to run the commend "net user" from the Command Prompt
unless you were in Safe Mode. This is quite alarming. If
you cannot execute this command in Normal Mode while
logged on as an administrator then there is something
seriously wrong with your machine. There is not point
in running the command in Safe Mode - that's just curing
the symptoms. If this problem persists then you need to
solve it first by starting a new thread in a WinXP networking
group with a Subject line such as "Cannot run 'net user'
command".

I am sorry but your reply does not make sense to me. I have never had
a william eckstein account on PC3 before and I was always able to

I did follow your instructions. I used "User Account" from Control
Panel on machine#3. I created an administrator account for william
eckstein. I went back to machine#1 and try to access machine#3

This is getting in a little strange. In my first reply I wrote this:

"Assuming that you log on as william eckstein/xxx, make sure that the
account william eckstein/xxx exists on each and every machine. Don't
use blank passwords and don't use guest accounts."

You have since told us that the account "william eckstein" does not
exist on PC3, yet you wonder why you keep having problems
with accessing shares. Perhaps I need to spell it out again:

*******************************************
*** Create an account for "william eckstein" on PC3 ***

(and make sure that the passwords match!)

I am not certain I follow your question. When I am on machine#1, I am
already logged on as william eckstein, which is the only account on
machine#1. I dont log in in order to access machine #3. I just go to
the workgroup window listing all the workgroup computers and try to
click on the icon for machine #3.
Your posted problem is that you are unable to access shared
share folders between PCs. You have since told us what
accounts you have but you haven't told us which account you
log on with when attempting to share folders. Which one is it?

AFAIK, you can't use accounts with blank passwords when
accessing shared folders.

Here are the results for machine#1

By way of background, machine #3's user was changing the system time
to circumvent time restrictions I had set up to limit her Internet
use. [i.e I was using CYBERSITTER to shut off her Internet access @ 10
pm every night]. Therefore, I rebooted in under safe mode and set up 2
adminstrator accounts. The first was just called administrator and was
password protected. Using this first account, I changed the security
properties for timedate.cpl. The second account is also an
administrator account called Bess Allison and is not password
protected. When the user boots up in regular mode to #3, they log in
under the Bess Allison and they don't see the administrator account
that appears in safe mode

When I tried to run cmd in regular mode, the command prompt would not
open. The message said something about needing the administrator
account to access this feature. I rebooted into Safe Mode. I logged
into the administrator account and ran net user. Here is the result

You don't set up accounts for machines as you suggest; you
set them up for users!

To determine where you stand, you need to do this on PC1:
- Click Start / run
- Type this: cmd {OK}
- Type this:
net user > c:\PC1.txt {Enter}
notepad c:\PC1.txt {Enter}
- Paste the contents of this file into your reply

Now do the same thing on PC3 and paste the data into
your reply. Make sure to flag the data so that we know
which is which. The results should be interesting...

Assuming that you log on as wale23/xxx, make sure that the
account wale23/xxx exists on each and every machine. Don't
use blank passwords and don't use guest accounts.

I think that an important point is being overlooked.
You advised me me "If some other PC tries to access
a WinXP share via a network connection then it can do
so unchallenged only if it supplies suitable credentials in the
form of your current logon account name / password."
If this true in all circumstances, then how is PC2 able to access
PC1's shares without PC2 having an account on PC1. Also PC3 can access
PC2's shares and PC1's shares. but yet PC3 does not have an account
set up on either 1 or 2?

I have never had
a william eckstein account on PC3 before and I was always able to
access shared folders. It is only recently that the problem with PC3
started. I dont have a william eckstein account on PC2 and I am still
able to access shared folders on PC2 from PC1. Also PC2 and PC3 dont
have accounts on PC1 and even now they can still access shared folders

I wasn't overlooking this point but I chose to ignore it. It is
possible to set up the GUEST account to open up shares
to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Doing so creates a huge
security hole, hence I won't consider doing things in this
way. You may well have the GUEST account enabled.
I am totally ignorant about this mode of operation.

Thanks for your reply. I now understand the issue. I have followed
your directions. I set up a user account on #3 called "dana" with a
password. I have the account logged in on #3. I went to PC2 (which is
dana) and logged in on dana with the same password. I tried to access

denying me access.
Can you help me pinpoint the problem?

Since I have no way of verifying what exactly you did, I must
establish my own environment. Please follow the instructions
below ***verbatim***.

1. Create the file c:\ShareTest.bat on PC3 and on PC2. It
must contain the following lines. Do not retype the lines - use
cutting and pasting instead. Make no changes other than
entering the correct PC names in lines 2 and 3.
@echo off
set PC2=??? (Replace ??? with the name of PC2!)
set PC3=??? (Replace ??? with the name of PC3!)
if not "%1"=="" goto Label2
call :Exec net user Test1 password /add
call :Exec net localgroup administrators Test1 /add
call :Exec net share TestShare=%SystemRoot%
call :Exec net user
call :Exec net share
goto :eof

:Label2
if /i "%ComputerName%"==%PC2% (
set Target=%PC3%
) else (
set Target=%PC2%
)
call :Exec net use r: \\%Target%\TestShare
call :Exec net use
goto :eof

:Exec
echo %ComputerName%: %* >> c:\test.txt
echo %ComputerName%: %* >> c:\test.err
%* 1>>c:\test.txt 2>>c:\test.err

2. Log on to PC2 under an admin account.
3. Type this command at a Command Prompt: c:\ShareTest
4. Log on to PC3 under an admin account.
5. Type these commands at a Command Prompt:
c:\ShareTest
c:\ShareTest 2
6. Go back to PC2.
7. Type this command at a Command Prompt:
c:\ShareTest 2
8. Paste the contents of c:\test.txt and c:\test.err from ***each***
PC into your reply.

If you're curious, here is what the batch file will do:
- It will create an admin account "Test1" on each PC.
- It will create a share "TestShare" on each PC.
- It will attempt to map this share to a drive letter.
- It will record all screen output in two log files.

OK, your log files show exactly what works and what does
not. They reveal the following apparent contradictions:
- \\bess\TestShare exists when viewed from \\bess.
- \\bess\TestShare is not fully accessible from \\dana.

I do not know what could cause this behaviour. Here are
the options I see for you:
a) Live with the problem.
b) Reload Windows on \\bess, and perhaps also on \\dana.
c) See if someone else can offer some advice.
d) Ring Microsoft for assistance. If it's a Windows bug
(which I think is unlikely) then the call will be free, otherwise
they will charge you.
e) Give me access to your two machines so that I can
poke around and see what's going on

Option e) involves you installing the reverse takeover
option of WinVNC, which takes a couple of minutes.
It requires that both machines have Internet access,
preferably with an ADSL/DSL connection. You would
be in control at all times, same as with a phone call: You
start the connection and you can stop it any time you like.
It's what I do with my clients all the time. While the session
is live, you can see what I'm doing. There is an obvious
risk in you giving access to a stranger, a risk that does not
exist with options a) to e). If you choose one of them then
I will stop monitoring this thread because I am unable to
offer any further advice.
