Can't open shared folders over LAN

G

Gordon Graham

I have what seems to be a bizarre problem. I have 3 XP Pro machines on a
wireless LAN using Simple File Sharing. They can all see each other in My
Network Places/View Workgroup Computers. For one of the computers (let's
call it "A"), when you access it from Computers B and C you can see all of
the shared folders on A, but when you try to open any of the shared folders
it thinks for about three minutes and comes back with the message:

"\\ComputerA\SharedFolder is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator...

The specified network name is no longer available."

On computer C if have:

- ensured that NetBIOS over TCP/IP was enabled
- unshared and reshared the shared folders
- reinstalled Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks
- reset the TCP/IP stack using "netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]"
- restarted the Computer Browser and Server services
- rebooted all of the computers a million times

To no avail. By the way, everything is fine with respect to sharing files an
A and B, and C is able to open the shared folders on A and B with no
problem.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks.

Do you by any chance have Zone Alarm installed? If so, you need to make each
computer a Trusted Site. However, first you can turn Zone Alarm off to check
to see if it is the problem and then you will know for sure.

Thanks, but I don't have Zone Alarm.

Thanks, Jonah. I have read all those links and tried everything in them I
think.

I have disabled simple file sharing and re-enabled it, but if it is a
security issue, what should I be looking for in the security settings?

What puzzles me is that all of my shared folders (about 6) quit working at
the same time, so it doesn't seem to be anything I did to a specific folder.

Somehow I think the "specified network name is no longer available" is a
clue, but I don't know.

Sharing Tab - "Everyone" Full Control. (I assume Simple File Sharing sets
this by default).

Security Tab - "Users" - permissions as required.

The most strict policy applies.

Everyone, Users and Guest all have full control, but it doesn't seem to
solve the problem.

Try doing basic computer maintenance on that machine...chkdsk, defrag,
ad-aware, etc.

Have a nice one...
