Folder Properites

I want to be able to review/modify the properties of certain folders.
According to my 2003 FrontPage book, I should be able to do File | Property
on a folder and set options to disallow users from browsing my folders. I
can't do this.

Why not?

It seems to not matter if I have a live site open or not. I just tried both
ways. If site is closed, I get a property box that has everything grayed
out. I can make any changes.

1. If you are doing this on the remote server, the host must allow you to do this.

2, If you are doing this locally, then you must be running IIS, you can not do this on a disk-based
web.

I'm doing this locally. I'm running Windows 2K with IIS Loaded. Although
I'm not sure what IIS does for me.

You may be right, that my server is not allowing it. I will check into
this. But I would think that I should be able to do this locally.

Locally you are opening the web in FP via http://, correct?

Note: Even if you can do this locally, the permissions in most cases will not be published to the
remote server.

I guess the real question is... how can you prevent file/folder browsing.

The book I have says to set these in certain situations. The book does not
mention these issues.

By default, most hosts already have folder browsing disabled. If this is not the case, then contact
your host.

The first and last FP book I purchased was FrontPage 97 Step by Step.

If your host won't disable directory browsing, place a default page in the
folder. This could redirect to your home page, or just have some
navigation.
See http://www.rxs-enterprises.com/images/ for an example.
(The default page would have the same name as your home page.)
