Folder Permissions

After searching and reading on this site, please don't shoot me for asking
anyway - is there a way that I can allow only certain people or work groups
to access the files in a particular folder that I set up on the company
server? It is OK for anyone to look at all of the files in the folder, but
only certain people should be able to actualy open and revise them. If so,
can I do this on my own or does IS have to do it at the server level? We each
have a drive that no one else can access, but other team people are asking to
see my work in progress. I am willing to move my files to a more public place
- we have several drives that can be accessed by different people and work
groups - but not unless access can be restricted. There are certain files
that exist on those drives that , if I click on them, I get a message that I
don't have access. Can I make that happen for people trying to access my
folders?

Thanks.
