Right click Shortcut/Folder | Properties
If it is a shortcut then go to "Shortcut" tab and click Change Icon
If it is a folder, then go to Customize tab and click Change Icon
Click Browse and browse to the icon file
Click OK | OK

In order for you to use a photo as a folder icon it must have an .ico
extension. Here is a link to a free and very good photo program.(download the
plugins as well you can view quicktime movies with this).
http://www.irfanview.com/

Open the photo you wish to use with irfranview and save it with an .ico
extension then follow what Ayush suggested.

Good Luck!

Not sure I understand but I will give it a shot.
I believe you created a folder on your desktop. Then to change the icon,
you should right mouse click on the folder icon and in the menu, select
properties. On the property dialog, it will have tabs. One of the tabs is
"Customize". Select that and you will see an option to change the Icon. If
you don't want to use the standard Icons, you will use the Browse button.
Then you can select any icon you have on your computer. You can also select
an exe (executable) file that displays an icon already for you.

If you want to take one of your pictures and convert it to an icon, I
suggest you download "Addison FavIcon" (a freeware program you can Google
and download). This will create an icon from any photo. Then you can use
that icon.

Does this answer your question.

There is an option that lets you change the Icon & and an option to change
the picture. Don't get them confused. The option you should use is to
change the Icon (located at the very bottom of the dialog).
