Folder/file settings.

I like my folder/file settings as "Details"
not as icons.
How do I make the change permanently please?

Open Windows Explorer, click on view and select details. Then click on
tools, folder options, view tab and apply to all folders.

Close ALL windows - leave nothing opened/minimized.

Open Windows Explorer (or "My Computer").
(*note* Windows Explorer is not Internet Explorer)

Choose View --> (Whatever view you like best)
(Heck, Choose View --> Status Bar - toggle that too, look at the bottom of
the window - see which one you like best.)

Tools --> Folder Options
General Tab
(Change whatever you want here.. For example: Show Common Tasks in
Folders)

Tools --> Folder Options
View tab
(Change whatever check boxes you want here..)
THEN - Click on Apply to all Folders
Answer to the affirmative for whatever questions..

Close Windows Explorer (or My Computer)...
Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer)...

That do it for you?

As far as it being 'permanent' - if you change a view - it may apply to that
particular window for good - unless you change it back. However - this
starts all your Windows Explorer/My Computer views on a level playing field.

that was the first thing on my desktop.

I am in 98se at the moment, just getting XP
ready prior to strapping in for blastoff.
(Adding all subsidiaries, snagit, excel, works, avg etc & etc)

You should like XP, it is pretty solid and "better" that 98.

Maybe so,
the speed of my processor (3Ghz) is an absolute delight,
but the layout of XP is something akin
to going away for the weekend.
Someone has burgled the house
and rearranged all the furniture on my return.

No doubt I'll settle in, just hope I dont
miss the pipe and slippers of 98.

You can choose "classic" view (like Win98) for many things like menus, etc.
That's a real help when setting things up... or for good
