Folder/Directory number of files limitation?

Hi,

I just upgraded to XP home, installing over the top of Windows ME. I am wondering if there is file # limitation per folder?

The reason why I ask is that I am a professional photographer, utilizing a bit of software from Phase One called Capture One, and after 10,922 files accumulate in a preview directory (these consist of 1K work files which save image manipulation data and 2,000K preview files) the software refuses to recognize any more images. I have asked on the Capture One help forum, but they are unable to help out... I am wondering if there is a problem perhaps with the way that ME set up the directories and it has carried over to XP. Others with this software do not have the same limitation as I.

Thank you,

*steve

Fat32 file systems have a max of 65 000 names (of 11 char) in a folder. Long names use more than one name.

NTFS has no folder limits and would take centuries to generate the maximum files allowed on a disk (ie very big number).

If you installed over Windows ME, you are still using the fat32 file system,
along with all its limitations. Convert the drive to NTFS and the limits
will evaporate.

Richard,

Will converting the drive to NTFS require that I format the drive? I am assuming it will...

Thanks for the help.

You do not have to format the drive to convert. It is usually trouble free,
but backup your important files before you begin.

Open the command prompt and type in "convert C: /fs:ntfs" without the
quotes. Follow the instructions. Then x out and reboot. The file system will
be converted during the reboot. Don't forget to defrag, as the
partition/drive will be messed up and fragmented badly until you do.

Specifically a long name (even one notionally long by having a lower
case character) needs one additional entry for every thirteen
characters, including period and extension
