File length limited to 75 charactoers?

I am editing some photographs and would like to insert a brief comment in
the file name. However, Windows limits the file length to (about) 75
characters and simply stops there.

Is this normal, or can I adjust the file length somewhere?

I personally believe you might want to rethink your use of long filenames a
bit - especially given you are running into trouble at 75 characters - that
is a lot for a *filename*.

If these files are of the right type - you might look into metadata.

The length includes the full path to the file; I believe that this length
cannot exceed 256 characters. This length is specified by the ntfs
documentation.

It seems that the path to the file is quite large, and all you have left is
75 (which is no small amount).

Maybe you should rethink your naming conventions.

NTFS can handle path+file lengths of up to around 32,000 characters. Under
Windows, the limit is 260 characters because of certain APIs. Some tools
such as robocopy.exe or ntbackup.exe are not subject to this limitation. See
also here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247(VS.85).aspx.

You can, in fact, create your own path that exceeds 260 characters, using
substituted or networked drives. In happens all the time in networked
environments, much to the frustration of system administrators.

Try right-clicking the file name in Windows Explorer. Choose
"Properties", then click the "Summary" tab. You can put title,
comments, several things there.

You guys were right. It looks like I used up a lot of the 260 allowed
character, just getting to the files in question. I made the chain shorter
and now I have a lot more characters for my comments.

Tank you
